Have you used the hip carry for babies under 6 months?  DD will be 5 months in about 10 days and is a pretty big girl with excellent control.  Just curious if you've experimented with the hip carry prior to 6 months (which is what Hotslings recommends in their pamphlet)?

I have 3 different pouch slings.  I have used a front carry for DD in the last 2 months or so.  I think as long as you make sure fabric is above her waist, you are fine.  Just pull it to her armpits in case she flips backwards.

Sarah loves riding on my hip.  She's still a peanut, so I have to roll the shoulder side to hike her up a little more.  I also have to pull the fabric up a little past her armpits.  I made my own sling from calico and it doesn't have a lot of give.  If the fabric slides down, it cuts across her back.

Just this week I"ve started wearing DS in a hip carry.  He holds his head steady and is huge at 17lbs and 27in at his 3 month appointment.  Not for long periods of time though, just if I have to run into the grocery store for an item or two.
