Ibuprofen dosage? Questioning Dr...

LO's pedi told us to give her 2ML (at current weight of 17.2lbs) every 6 hours if needed. We went to give her some for the first time last night and the box says:

12-17 lbs: 1.25 ML

18-23 lbs: 1.875 ML

I was hesitant to give her more than what is recommended for even the next weight range so we gave her just 1.25 ML. I'm wondering what dosage your pedi prescribed.

Re: Ibuprofen dosage? Questioning Dr...

  • We give the 1.25 ML once before bed b/c DS is teething and I won't give it to him twice unless it has been 8 hrs since the first dose.

  • We gave it for teething too. 2ML seems like a lot!
  • We haven't gotten an updated dose in a while. When Riley is teething, we give 0.8mL and it helps. I'd say to try less (like the 1.25mL like you did), and if that does the trick, no need to give more!

  • The dose is 10mg per kg. Your DCs wt in kg is 7.8, so 78 mg, which would be about 1.5 ml. So, yeah, I think that is a big dose. I think some old school doctors round up, a lot! I am sure the 1.25 would be sufficient. You can give it every 6-8 hours though. GL!

  • We give 1.25 - and even that seems like a lot to me!  My LO is 16 lbs though!

I'm with you on up until you said 78 mg is 1.5 mL.  I think you're confused by the concentration listed on the bottle.  Boxes of infant ibuprofen list the concentration as 50 mg/1.25 mL.  If you accidentally thought that it's 50 mg/mL, then yes, 78 mg would be about 1.5 mL.  However, 50 mg/1.25 mL is the same as 40 mg/mL, so 78 mg is about 2 mL.

  • Also, remember that labeled directionson many OTC meds are less than what is often prescribed.  For example, OTC adult ibuprofen says to take 1 or two tablets (200-400 mg), but doctors may prescribe up to 800 mg in one dose.  This doesn't mean that you should always take more than the directions say, but sometimes it's appropriate under the advice of a doctor.

  • DD is on 1mL every 6hrs and she's 18 lbs. She has a cough. I would also think for how long does your LO plan to be on ibuprofen, like 1 or 2 days or more.
