Thoughts/Reactions to Zebediah?

I like this name.  DH is undecided.

Gk. form, probably, of Zabdi or Zebediah. The father of James and John (Mt 4:21), and the husband of Salome (27:56; Mk 15:40).

He was a Galilean fisherman, living probably either at or near Bethsaida. From the mention of his "hired servants" (Mk 1:20) and the acquaintance between John and Annas the high priest, it has been inferred that the family was in good circumstances. He appears only once in the gospel narrative (Mt 4:21-22; Mk 1:19-20), where he is in his boat with his two sons, mending their nets.

Re: Thoughts/Reactions to Zebediah?

  • I have a friend named Zeb and we always call him Zebediah, but while it fits him I think it is a tough name to pull off.

  • It's very biblical so I would probably assume that the parents are very religious.  Personally, I find it too archaic.  It's hard for me to imagine a boy born today being really excited about being named Zebediah.  Sorry.

This.  It's just too old school (and not in a cool way) for my tastes.

  • Mormon, Amish, it brings up a very very religious family image for me.
  • My first thoughts "Really?  You want to name your child this?"  That being said I like the meaning of the name.  However, I think you would have to live in a very religious community for your child to pull this name off.

  • I love a lot of biblical names, but I agree with others that this would be a tough name to pull off.

  • It's very backwoodsy. I like the NN "Zeb" alright, but the entire name makes me cringe. Maybe it's such a knee-jerk reaction for me, though, because my LN is pretty hillbilly....

I don't know. With so many other great, classic, neutral-association names in the Bible, why choose one that'll make your son sound like a Deliverance character?

  • I pretty much agree with everything said: Sounds Amish/Children of the Corn to me. I like biblical names but Zebediah is just too hard to pull off.

    How about Jeremiah or Malachai?

Yes  I honestly think most kids would hate their parents for naming them that.

  • Biblical names is kind of our 'theme' (we have a Neriah and this one will most likely be Gideon), but I think Zebediah is a little much.  There are lots of unique names in the Bible that are less out there.  GL!

  • It is a whole lot of first name for a baby. But with so many uncommon Bible names being used around me it wouldn't phase me.  I prefer it to a lot of the other trendy Z names

  • I know a Zebediah--and think he's great! He's 17 and brother to Naomi and Tallulah (not a religious family). Awesome, awesome young man. Amazing musician (his band actually makes $$$$), solid student, polite as all heck.

My opinion on the name is obviously colored by the cool kid I know who has it. I think it's great. :)

  • I'll tell you this in all honesty - this is our "joke" boy name, as in the name is so funny to us that we'd obviously never use it.  Incidentally, our joke girl name is Cloris Phyllis.  ;)
