Milk question

Simon finally started drinking milk (with a 1/2 t strawberry Quik added to each 8 oz) and I give him a full sippy cup when he first wakes up, then one after morning nap then one after afternoon nap.  So he's done all his 24 oz) by 4 p.m.  Do I need to spread it out more and give him some before bed?

Re: Milk question

  • Simon doesn't "need" milk so you don't have to give him 24 oz, either.  My pedi actually doesn't want Aaron having more than 16 oz per day (he usually gets around 12 oz).

So do what you want with the milk. There's no "rule" about this. Follow his cues. If he wants all three 8 oz cups, and your pedi is OK with the amount, then go for it.

This is Aaron's milk schedule (and in bottles... I'm bad and need to figure out what sort of cup he'll take it in).

    4 oz after breakfast (@ 6:45 am)

4 oz with late morning snack  (@10:30 am)

4 oz after afternoon snack (@ 4 pm)

He gets water with his lunch and dinner.

The pedi never said a thing about milk since Simon wouldn't touch the stuff so she just said to keep feeding him lots of yogurt and cottage cheese and cheese. Now all of a sudden he's drinking milk! I figured 24 oz was good for skinny babies and 16 oz was the recommendation for bigger babies??? Have you tried Aaron on the straw sippy? We use the thick straw ones for water/juice and the thin straw one for milk, he won't drink out of the kind you tip.

  • Robyn's spot-on... max of 16 oz.  Otherwise he fills up on milk and won't be as hungry for regular food.  Even for skinny kids.  She recommended water with his meals and milk as a snack, etc.[

But as for a bedtime bottle... if he's sleeping good, I don't think you really need it then.  But if he's waking up, I'd think a small 4 ouncer would be a good idea.

We specifically asked the pedi this today at our 1 yr appt.  (stats being posted shortly) since we're about to switch to milk, too.

This. I only give M a few ounces of milk on days I try to drop 1 BFing session, but he always gets water at meals and throughout the day.

  • I just had the weaning conversation since I have 30ish days before surgery to do it.  For months, 11/12, my pedi said to work towards four 6 oz feedings, and then when she's 13 months to drop to 16 oz a day.  She said her kids did better on four 4 oz feeding, but three feeding of 5 oz+ were also fine.

Ellie has been drinking from a straw sippy since she was 4-5 months old.  She'll drink water and juice from it happily, but she will not drink milk, whether it's the soy we just started or BM, from the straw.  I just took the valves out of the rejected regular sippy's and she fine,

  • Keegan who is a smaller toddler, drinks between 16-20 oz of essential boost (recommended after dinner) & pediasure & whole milk throughout the day (he prefers stuff not flavored, but of course supplemental stuff is all flavored).

All kids drink differently, so if he is sleeping great at night then no worries on when he drinks his milk.. just make sure he is eating/snacking too.  If you & his pediatrician are worried about his weight, then make sure he is snacking/eating high in calories/fat heathly foods.

  • My pedi also said no more than 16 oz a day, at most..Callie is having a hard time with milk, After her year check up we tried the milk/formula..4 oz of formula to 1 oz of milk...For three days then increased the milk by one oz and decreased the formual..etc..for 3 days...wel lshe got really cranky and constipated. Pedi said stop it and go back to formula, she was on nutramagen...Ok moving forward we try again at 14 months and still no better..Pedi said to try lactiad..off to the store tomorrow...Good luck!
