Baby Names

Frances

Someone posted a link awhile ago about names rising in popularity.  I know this was a link about names that were being searched for, not being used, but it has made me worried ever since because Frances was on the list. I know Francis is technically a unisex name, but I was feeling confident that my baby will not have a bunch of other Francis/ Franceses in his class.

It isn't popular in my state, but do you think this name will be trending up like some of the other old lady names?

Do you know any little Franceses? Or are you considering it?

Re: Frances

  • It is a top contender for either sex for a future child- but as a middle name only. I'd like to use it to honor my dad (it's his first name)

I have two family members with that name (dad included) and have met one Francine (older than me). I have never heard it on a young child.

  • It's supposedly among the most popular names with upper-class/elitist parents. I don't know how accurate that estimate is, because, well, it's hard to decide who counts as an "elitist" but if the article I read is to be believed Frances is rising as quickly as Atticus, Declan, and Milo are for boys.

  • My sister's mom is named Frances. She HATES her name. When my sister was pregnant she begged her not to name her child after her. Thankfully, babydaddy's last name was Francis (Fran didn't know this, or that the baby would get his last name). So, there is no Frances Francis running around Asheville right now.
  • I know two.. one is a 50 year-old woman, the other a 13 year-old girl, she goes by Frannie.
  • I know a 40 something year old woman named Frances; she goes by Fran.  My uncle's name is Francis; he goes by Ray (his MN is Raymond).

So, clearly, it's not so well-loved by the one's that I know.  I think it's a solid name.  I've met 3 or 4 of them in my lifetime, but no young ones.  They are all at least 25 years old.

  • Just FYI, the Frances spelling is usually used for girls and the Francis spelling is usually used for boys. Not always though. I love the name and haven't met any under the age of 80! I love Frank as a nn for Francis and I love Francie as a girl nn.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I do know the difference. I am planning on naming my son Francis.  The article listed Frances as a soon to be popular again girl name.  I was hoping my son's name would be not popular and therefore no other boys or girls with the name in his class. And thus I wouldn't be giving him a unisex name.

  • Frances was on our long list for DD.  I love the name, personally.
  • I had a great aunt Frances who went by Fran, and there was a girl in one of my classes in elementary school (so early 20s now) whose name was Frances and went by Frankie. Those are the only two I've met though.
  • Frances was my #1 girl pick.

My husband veto-ed it and won't relent.

So no Frances for me : (

  • I actually do know a Frances. I don't know any little ones named Sophia, Olivia, Jacob, or any of the common popular names but I've met a baby named Frances.

  • This name is popular in Washington state mostly because of Kurt Cobain's daughter though I only know 2 kids with that name.

  • My friend's name is Frances and she goes by Fran. IMO it is just too old sounding and kinda dated. I would go with Francesca over Frances.
