Carseat change question

LO is about ready to move into a bigger carseat from her travel system/carrier carseat.  At what age did your LO move?  (I understand it is about weight... I was just wondering at what age your LO reached that weight and "upgraded" to their new seat.)  Also, do you plan to stick with the convertible, or are you going to someday do a booster?  My carseat is a Graco MyRide 65, which can support LO until she is 65 lbs.  I read that a lot of booster careats can start supporting LOs at 40 lbs.  Well, since I can keep my convertible until LO is 65 lbs, do I need a booster carseat someday?  TIA!

Re: Carseat change question

  • My 7 year old DS is not even 65 pounds, and he would not be happy if I tried to strap him into a convertible seat!  The law is he has to be in a booster til age 8, so he's been in a booster for a while.  (or 4'9"- which means I would have been in a booster until high school Stick out tongue)

You have to figure how heavy a 65 pound kid is, and at what age. We definitely needed a booster.  He was no longer digging the "baby" seat.

  • My big kids moved to their convertibles around 3-4 months.

The recommendation is to rear-face to the limits of the seat.  My DD almost made it to age 2, so I hope to get my son there as well.

It is recommended to keep a child harnessed until they reach the minimum height/weight for a booster seat AND are mature enough to sit correctly in a booster (ie: don't unbuckle themselves, don't lean over, don't put the seatbelt behind them, etc.)

This. My almost 4yo SS unbuckles himself when he doesn't get his way. Therefore, in our car, he's still in a convertible - in his mom's, he sits in the booster.?

  • We're moving G over to a convertible soon in my car but he'll stay in the infant seat in DH's car a bit longer. The way my seat works his feet are hitting the seat, in DH's they aren't. I also have the My ride 65, I'll keep LO in it for as long as he needs a harness. I agree with above if he shows maturity to handle a booster (once he's of age/weight).
  • We have used a convertible since birth and we invested in an expensive one but it will last through the booster years so we are planning on using it for the long haul... BTW its Recaro brand

Ditto this!  My large for age almost 4 year old made it in the Britax Marathon rear facing till right before he turned 2....weight maxed out for rear facing so I had to turn him.  I am looking into a booster for him b/c he is about to grow out of the Marathon seated height wise and will probably get him the Graco Nautilus.  Looked at the Britax Frontier but since I will need to buy 2, I'm going with the Graco.....plus it converts eventually to the seat belt booster then backless booster.

DS#2 will be in the convertible soon.  He is 18.5 lbs at 5.5 months but was off the charts for height at his 4 month appt.  His feet hang off but there is still plenty of head room/seated height for him.  I will probably keep him in it longer than #1 b/c of having 2 kids (easier) and the fact that he is sitting but sometimes very wobbly.
