Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If you weaned from bottle to sippy cup...

I was looking at the paperwork from the pedi about feeding, and I read you should start weaning around 9 months. Guess I'm a little late there, huh? DD has just gotten the hang of drinking juice with water from a straw sippy. So do I start giving her formula from the sippy? If she won't drink it all (and I know she won't), do I then go back to the bottle? I'm so confused about this process. Any suggestions would be great. TIA!

  • I started giving Colin water in a sippy at 6m. It was the kind where you have to still suck (spill proof) so it's not really a true transition. At about 9m I gave him BM about once a day in it. Now he's totally transitioned. I do milk in the sippys he still has to suck but water is in a sippy where all you have to do is tip it.

We haven't moved on to straws yet. I've tried but he has no idea what to do.

  • Try different cups.  LO drinks water from a straw sippy or a soft spout sippy.  We only give him milk in a hard spout cup.  If she rejects the formula from the straw sippy, try a different spout.

  • We were told to use a sippy cup that does not have one of those stoppers in it.  We use the nuk learner cup.  Instead of giving her a bottle with formula we just give her a sippy cup with the formula.  We started with her lunch bottle and it went perfectly and then a week later did the morning bottle and lunch time bottle.  This weekend we are supposed to do the last bed time bottle.
