Cloth Diapering

Meconium

I imagine that this stuff sticks and stains and is an all around PITA and was thinking of just using disp's for the first few days so I don't have to deal with getting it out of my CDs. Is it so bad? Did you use cloth from day one?

Re: Meconium

  • Waited until it passed before moving onto cloth. Actually I think we just waited until we finished the pack of newborn sposies and then switched.

I've heard of people getting flannel liners or using old prefolds, to throw away, but that just seemed harder so I went the sposies route first. Might consider gdiapers this time for the meconium phase

  • We used CDs (PFs) as soon as we got home from the hospital.  The meconium was a non-issue.  We rinsed off the meconium after each diaper change, washed on hot, sun dried them to remove stains and fluffed in the dryer.  We still have the same PFs, and they still look great.  We didn't see any reason to use sposies at any time.

  • We just used the sposies in the hospital. I was there from Thursday-Saturday and by the time we got home her poop was transitioning enough that we didn't have any staining problems.  I did use just pre-folds the first couple of days so I wouldn't ruin a more expensive dipe
  • I'm planning to CD from day 1. I've heard of enough people who did it with no issues that I'm willing to give it a chance, probably just with PF and covers.

  • Maybe some cheap liners that I don't mind throwing away would be a solution. Thanks for your replies!

  • I just got advice from my Bradley class, they said meconium really sticks to the baby's skin and is hard to get off.  My instructor recommended covering baby's bum with a thin layer of vaseline to make it easier to get the meconium off, which doesn't sound like a very CD-friendly idea.  Did anyone try that?
  • We used sposies for the first week before switching to cds.
