I'm having professional pictures done for Eli's first birthday--and those will be the first professional pictures we've had done of Eli.
I haven't had any professional pictures done of Samuel since he was 18 months old (he's 2 years, 8 months now). We had Sam's professional pictures taken at 3 months and 12 months.
Guess I'm just not into the pro pictures. Maybe I'll regret it someday. Who knows.

I'd spend the money--not a ton, but I would spend some. I'll admit it. I'm just lazy when it comes to professional pics. Sam is more concerned with studying the photography equipment than he is about posing with the photographer. It's just such a hassle.
So, like I said, I'll probably regret it someday, but then again, when I visit my parents, I don't see my 3, 6, 9, and 12 month pictures all hanging on the walls there.
It's a sore spot with my MIL, though!
I don't think that is flameful at all! I haven't gotten any pro pics done either, I am waiting until his first birthday.
I like candid's way more.
I know this would be me. We're getting family portraits in a few weeks. Other than that, I'm not worried about it. I take a ton of amateur pics and I like those more.

We bought a nice DSLR camera before DS was born in order to avoid the guilt of never getting professional pics done. Because I am so the kind of person that would blow it off.

I hope you don't regret it. It's not really that big of a deal. I've had Colin's done at birth and 6m so far and we're going to do Christmas and his birthday and then move to once a year.
As long as you have lots of regluar pictures, I think you'll be just as happy later down the road.
