Still swaddling, and don't know how to stop

:) I actually cannot put her to bed without swaddling her. I've tried to lay her down on her stomach, her side, her back, and it wakes her up every time -- seems like her arms or head dangle between getting her from my arms to the bed. And I try to pat her and shhh her, but she just gets pissed, and then we have to go through the whole routine again. Whereas swaddled, she will mostly stay asleep. Is there a technique to this? I feel like an idiot! But she's outgrowing her swaddles, and I'm starting to think she doesn't like being swaddled all night long (very squirmy and seems frustrated that she can't move).

Thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

  • What if you tuck the blanket around her while rocking her so the opening is towards her back and when you lay her down just tuck it under her like a burrito. That way she can slowly wiggle out. I wouldn't be so worried though it's not like she will be 18 and still being swaddled. lol

  • We stopped swaddling cold turkey at 5 1/2 months. Everytime I would swaddle him he would get very frustrated and squirm around and whine, so he was ready for it. I was so nervous to do it too, but it wasn't bad at all. He sttn as he normally would.

Maybe you can try just putting her in a sleep sack and see how she handles that or you can always start by not swaddling her arms and then keep making the swaddle looser and losser every night. GL!

  • we still swaddle Oliver. He just loves it to much to break the habit right now. When he's sleepy he lays straight to get ready for the swaddle. Carson on the other hand hates it and stopped swaddling on his own at 3 months. Is she ready to be broke of the habit? A&A blankets are the best swaddle blankets. They are HUGE still big enough to swaddle Oliver. Good luck!
  • We stopped cold turkey as well at 5 1/2 months. She kept breaking out and was waking up at night so we could reswaddle.

It did take her a bit to get used to her arms being free and gaining control over them. I always rocked her in rocking chair, then when she was asleep, I layed her in her crib, but I stayed there holding her hands down until she was settled. It seemed to help her.

Now she's like yeah, um could you bust a move outta here, girlfriend's trying to get some sleep.... I just put her in her crib and out the door I go.

I really did think she would be swaddled forever! lol!

  • We still swaddle.  We've tried to stop twice now, and it's been an epic fail each time.  I figure she'll let us know when she's done with the swaddle and it certainly isn't yet.
