Water Toxicity?

DH and I have given DD small sips of water at times because she started showing such interest when we were drinking it.

I was thinking of bringing a sippy cup of water with me when going out to dinner to:

a) introduce a sippy cup and b) keep DD busy.

My question is this... do I need to be concerned with water toxicity? When can you start giving water and how much?

Have any of you talked to your pedis about this?

Re: Water Toxicity?

  • At our six month check up, my pedi said that we could start giving her a sippy with an oz of water...

  • I haven't really thought about it. I know you can buy nursery water. But I would think that you could boil it first.

  • At our DS's 6 month appointment the Pedi. said we could give DS as much water as he wanted, but only up to 4 oz total of juice (not citrus juices) a day.
  • My pediatrician said we could start offering an ounce or so of water in a sippy one or two times per day if we wanted to.

ETA:  She also said she preferred filtered water (not necessarily bottled, just filtered).

  • DS can have juice?  We just moved and I called to change DS' dr but now that I'm back close to the military base it's a small process so his 6 month checkup will probably be in a couple weeks.

My office said an ounce per month (so six ounces).  DD doesn't really drink juice just to help if she gets constipated.  We do water too - as much as she wants - again I think that helps her get things going.
