I've been in the hospital since Fri. with pre-term labor. They were able to get my contrax stopped with a course of Indocin by Mon. AM, but they started back up again on Tuesday afternoon. I've been given Procardia, which has (for the most part) pulled them back enough that I'm probably going to go home tomorrow.
I've been told that I'm going to go home with a script for Procardia to take as needed, but the Dr. said that it won't stop labor if the babies want to come. I'd like to hold onto these little ones for at least 2 more weeks.
Anyone have a similar situation where you were sent home and told to take Procardia as needed? Success stories? Thoughts about this? Thanks!
Re: Procardia success?
I was put on bed rest and Procardia at 32 weeks and it helped slow the contractions. I took it every 6 hours and I knew when the time was coming to take the meds b/c the contractions would start. I took them until 35 when I went on hospital bed rest until my boys came at 36 and 2.
I was off my feet and focused on staying very hydrated. Good luck!
I was on Procardia beginning at 26 weeks due to PTL. I started off at 30mg extended-release 1x a day and then went up to 2 a day at 28 weeks. Finally at 33 weeks I went up to the max dose of 3x a day. It worked incredibly well for me holding off my labor until 35w3d when it stopped working for me and I went into true labor. I do not believe that I would have kept my twins cooking until then had it not been for the Procardia.
And btw...your doc was right. When your babies are ready to come, no medicine in the world will stop them.
I was on procardia. I was on it for around 6 weeks before I delivered (because I developed Pre-E), so I think it def. helped me control contractions. I was also on strict bedrest at home.
I was on a regular dose though. Every 8 hours (3 times a day). I'm not sure what your doc. means by 'as needed'? I would see if you can take it regularly for piece of mind or just ask about that. Good luck.
