Procardia success?

I've been in the hospital since Fri. with pre-term labor.  They were able to get my contrax stopped with a course of Indocin by Mon. AM, but they started back up again on Tuesday afternoon.  I've been given Procardia, which has (for the most part) pulled them back enough that I'm probably going to go home tomorrow.

I've been told that I'm going to go home with a script for Procardia to take as needed, but the Dr. said that it won't stop labor if the babies want to come.  I'd like to hold onto these little ones for at least 2 more weeks.

Anyone have a similar situation where you were sent home and told to take Procardia as needed?  Success stories?  Thoughts about this?  Thanks! Smile

Re: Procardia success?

  • I was on procardia for several weeks due to PTL and it worked great for me. I stopped it at 36 weeks 2 days and I had them the next day (and the day after that).

  • I was given Nifedipine (procardia) around 26 weeks to slow down contrax, and it's definitely helped. My peri said I could stop taking them this past Sun., so I did. I have been having more contrax but nothing consistent.

  • I was on Procardia from about 28 weeks until I delivered.  Every 4 hours I took it round the clock and it really helped with my contractions.

  • I was put on bed rest and Procardia at 32 weeks and it helped slow the contractions.  I took it every 6 hours and I knew when the time was coming to take the meds b/c the contractions would start.  I took them until 35 when I went on hospital bed rest until my boys came at 36 and 2.

I was off my feet and focused on staying very hydrated.  Good luck!

  • I was on Procardia beginning at 26 weeks due to PTL.  I started off at 30mg extended-release 1x a day and then went up to 2 a day at 28 weeks.  Finally at 33 weeks I went up to the max dose of 3x a day.  It worked incredibly well for me holding off my labor until 35w3d when it stopped working for me and I went into true labor.  I do not believe that I would have kept my twins cooking until then had it not been for the Procardia.

And btw...your doc was right.  When your babies are ready to come, no medicine in the world will stop them.

  • I was started on procardia when I was 22 weeks pregnant.  I was taking it every 6 hours (even waking up in middle of the night to take it).  I had a scheduled C-section at 34 weeks.  If I was waiting to go into labor, I could have carried the twins even longer.
  • I was on the highest dose...I think it was 20 mg every 4 hours?  I can't remember.  I was also told it will calm the BH but if they want to come, they're coming.  At one point I also did about 36 hours of Mag Sulfate to help stop them.  I got from 31 weeks to 36 with bedrest and the above. I was still taking the Procardia when I felt it was finally time to go to the hospital.  I could feel the contrax stonger and within one or two hours after taking the last dose.  Even though I'd take the next dose early, I found the contrax still came early.  The babies wanted out regardless of the Procardia.
  • I was on procardia.  I was on it for around 6 weeks before I delivered (because I developed Pre-E), so I think it def. helped me control contractions. I was also on strict bedrest at home.

I was on a regular dose though.  Every 8 hours (3 times a day).  I'm not sure what your doc. means by 'as needed'?  I would see if you can take it regularly for piece of mind or just ask about that.  Good luck.

  • I have been on procardia for 10 days I take it every 8 hours due to ptl also I spent 5 days in the hospital the procardia is working for the most part.  I have dialated some more since i was realeased was a tight? 1 cm and now a 1 almost 2 but hopefully I can hold my boys in for several more weeks! Good Luck! and thanks for the post bc it helps to know there are others out there going through the same thing.
