BFP and no insurance

Help, Im totally freaking out. I only took the rest to test to settle my nerves because even though "I knew" I wasnt pregnant I just wanted confirmation after our one night of unsafe sex, guess who was wrong. I have no insurance this time around and dont even know where to start. I am excited but we are living with my mother in law and have no room for another baby, nor can we afford it. Why oh why didnt I just go buy condoms, idiot idiot idiot!!

Most importantly how do I get inexpensive insurance??

Re: BFP and no insurance

  • First, congrats - even though you are freaking out. You have several months to decide how you are going to live with another baby.

Second, are either of you employed? If so, open enrollment is probably this time of year for you (or him). Get on whatever plan you can. If you can't, start shopping for an individual plan. It will be expensive though.

  • wow.  that wasn't smart at all.  Your pregnancy is likely to be an uninsurable preexisting condition.
  • Not necessarily, gibs. It will depend on the plan. Definitely a question for asking when choosing or shopping around.
  • Well, it's likely to be prohibitively expensive if you can find a plan that will accept a pregnant woman, to the point where just paying for the prenatal care and delivery costs would likely prove much cheaper, although I could be wrong.  Still, seems pretty ill-advised to get KTFU w/o insurance.
  • Definitely not disagreeing with you there, gibs. However, she is not the first person to get KTFU without insurance, and certainly won't be the last.

To the OP - good luck.

  • My friends husband lost his job while she was PG, he got another job  quickly but it was awhile before he got covered.  She had to get cobra cuz the H and son's private policy wouldn't take her PG.

Good luck and congrats, things just tend to work out!

  • How long have you been without insurance?  Will you be eligible for a group plan soon?

I'm currently expecting and my H lost his job in late August when his company closed its doors.  They continued their group plan for September and October, but as of November 1st, it will expire.  This means we won't be eligible for COBRA (which is what we have now).

He has a new job and the new insurance will pick up December 1st.  We were told that as long as we didn't go more than 63 days without coverage, the new group plan would cover my pregnancy and could not consider it a pre-existing condition.

It's likely going to be VERY difficult to find a private plan that will cover your pregnancy.  You'd be better off working out a payment plan with the hospital and your OB.  My friend did this and it ended up costing her about $4-$5K out of pocket instead of the number they bill the insurance company.

Another option -- if you're out of work and that's why you don't have coverage, have you looked into Medicaid?  Even if one or both of you is employed, if you make under a certain amount and aren't offered group healthcare, you may at least qualify for Medicaid benefits for a fee.

    Good luck -- and congrats!

  • Congrats! Dont panic. There are tons of people out there who have lost jobs in the economy crash and are now uninsured. Check into your state plans. In PA, we have CHIP, and it is low cost insurance that covers all children no matter what the case. We also have WIC which covers women and children. It is a medicaid, but you can get your prenatal care, formula, diapers, pedi visits. Good luck. Things will work out, just do some research.
  • Check into Medi-cal. There is also a program for kids at any age, even prenatal. Go to California's state page.

  • I've already filled out the forms for medi cal and plan on turning them in tomorrow. Im just worried that I wont be apporved because my hubby makes too much money. My first pregnancy was high risk and I had my babes at 31 weeks so Im worried this one may also be considered high risk and want to make sure I have good insurance. I think paying out of pocket may be out of the question.

    Thanks for the helpful responses.

  • So none of you have insurance at all? What about your kids? You might qualify for Medicaid, and if so, your pregnancy would be covered.

I do have to say though, with 2 kids, living with your MIL and no insurance, you really need to get your act together. More children just make it increasingly difficult to climb out of your financial mess.

  • Yes thank you for your wise words. My hubby and children have insurance, its just expensive and so I keep putting it off. Mistakes no matter how large or small happen. I didnt intentionally myself over by getting pregnant. I didnt ask for a ration of *** from everyone I asked for help. Thank you to those that had something useful to say.

  • Sorry to pile on the ***, but you say it was not intentional. I see getting pregnant with birth control not intentional. Not using any protection seems pretty irresponsible in your position, so to say this pregnancy was a "suprise" would not totally be the truth.

How is that helpful? What's done is done.

ETA: She already admitted in her first post that she was an idiot, what's the point of trying to rub it in her face?  We're all human and we've all done dumb things at times.

  • Cleo, maybe b/c the next person to read this thread or one like it won't blithely go into an "oops" uninsured pregnancy to burden the rest of us financially via taxes without thinking that we're all 100% supportive?
