Do you believe in "fate?"

Or serendipity or that things happen for a reason?

Things seem to happen in my life that are far too eerie to just be coincidental or ironic.

For example, DS2 is having his second ear tube placement/adenoidectomy tomorrow.  We saw a different ENT on Monday because his had left the practice.  He was a super nice guy and was gracious enough to fit us in this week before our insurance expires.

Today, we went to our MOPS group.  I recognized a woman at the table next to me, but couldn't place where I knew her from.  It drove me CRAZY that I couldn't figure it out.  I thought she was probably just a client, but I'm usually great at linking kid clients to their parents and I couldn't figure it out.  I snuck a peek at her nametag and still couldn't place her.

On the way home, it suddenly came to me -- I had nannied for her child briefly when DS1 was a baby.  She was very nervous and her baby was SUPER needy.  He screamed the entire time and it ended up being too much for me.  They were nice people, but I wanted to be able to spend more time with DS and I ended up ignoring him the entire time I was there.

Then I had another AHA! moment...her last name is the same as the ENT's.  He's her husband!  I know this because he was in his residency for ENT when I watched their DS.

How weird is that?  And what's the point of me seeing her today when I've never seen her at the group before?

Re: Do you believe in "fate?"

  • Yes, I do believe in fate and/or that everything happens for a reason.  Sometimes that is all I have to cling to--knowing that someday, I'll understand why X happened.

  • Yes, I do. On this subject, if you've never read The Celestine Prophecy, it's something I recommend. It really changes the way you look at coincidences in your daily life.
  • Isn't The Celestine Prophecy a book of Scientology? My Dad is a Scientologist (whoooole nother topic,) and I think I remember this book always displayed at his house.

    No, not at all

  • Not necessarily fate, but I believe in God's will.

I find myself often thinking about this.  What am I supposed to learn from this?  Why did things happen this way?  It sort of keeps things in perspective for me.

Actually I am pretty sure it is, or at least it is tied to the religion and it's philosophies in some ways . My Dad dated some whakadoo Scientologist that had a professional picture hanging in her house of her reading this book to her children (while also wearing a Cinderella dress btw.)

  • Yes I believe in fate. I hated that book.
