9 mo stats and a blocked tear duct question

DD is a peanut at 18 lbs 2oz., 27 inches. The only concern the pedi had was with her eye. It's constantly red and teary. She said that it could be a blocked tear duct and if it doesn't clear up by her year appt., they'll have to "open it up." Has anyone's LO had this? What does it involve? Pedi said that if it hasn't cleared by 9 mo., it usually doesn't clear by a year. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. TIA!

My LO had one right after she was born and they were going to do the surgery (outpatient I think) when she was 6 weeks old.  They would have to put her under anesthesia.  Hers cleared up right before she was scheduled to have the surgery thankfully. I will be thinking about you!

My son had one from birth until about 3 months. We went to a pediatric optometrist and they told us the same thing that your doctor did. Certainly no one wants their child to have to undergo any kind of surgical procedure, no matter how minor, but I will tell you that it is an incredibly minor and easy procedure if you get to that point. Initially they told us to rub his eye (pushing into the tear duct) several times a day- the dr can show you how. But what finally cleared it up (and I sh*t you not, it was like after the very first drop that it cleared up) was a prescription eye drop called Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim Opthalmic Solution. Initially they had prescribed another drop that did nothing (Tobramycin). Good luck!

Drake was born with a severe blocked tear duct. His eyelid was pointed to the top of his nose. We went in and had it lanced once at a week old and had a set of drops bosoxbride had. THis was deemed unsuccessful as it closed up again. We had a tube surgically placed in his tear duct at 8 weeks old. We had drops for a week. The tube was removed at 6 months of age, and I am happy to say, ALL IS WELL!!! GOOD LUCK!!!?

Riley has a blocked tear duct...has had it since she was born. We kept hoping it would get better..but it hasn't. We've tried the drops and a cream (for the chapping around the eye from the constant draining)...and nothing has worked. She is scheduled to have the surgery on November 15th. They say its minor, but she still has to be put to sleep. I'm pretty nervous over it. I know its minor, but that's my baby! I'm sure everything will be fine. I'd try the drops and cream first...and if that doesn't work, then go for the surgery.
