Cloth Diapering

Thinking about switching to CD, a few q's

So I am thinking about switching my boys over to CD and I have a few questions I need cleared up (this is all so confusing for a CD virgin like me Stick out tongue ).

For Pockets or AIOs do you just change the insert or liners with a soiled or wet diaper or do you change the entire diaper?  If you just change the inserts does one diaper stay on all day?

How many diapers (minimum) would I need for my 2 month old and my (almost) 2 year old?  If I go with pockets or AIOs (which I am leaning on) would I need less than if I went with fitteds or prefolds?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. I'm looking into the jilliansdrawers trial too!

  • Pockets you can just change the liner if you place the liner on top  or you can insert the liner and change the entire diaper(Flips, Apple Cheeks, and there are a few other brands).

I like the diagram that Apple Cheeks has to picture this (go down to second page): https://applecheeks.com/site/images/PDF_AppleCheeks_Diapercare.pdf

AIOs the liner must be inserted so you have to change the entire diaper. (think Bum Genius)

  • With AIO and pockets, you change the entire diaper every time.  If you use fitteds or prefolds and covers, you can use the same cover more than once if poop did not get on it.  I use about 32 diapers before I wash every 3 or 4 days.

  • For pockets or AIOs you change the entire diaper. The purpose of the pocket is to be able to adjust absorbency by adjusting the number/type of inserts you use. The purpose is not to just change out the inner part.

I'd say for the infant, at least a couple dozen if you want to wash every other day. Not so sure about a toddler. I wouldn't change the number based on type of diaper.

    GL!

  • The AIO and pocket questions have been answered, but I can give you an idea on the diaps needed for a toddler.

I have a heavy wetter so for some (fitteds and AIO) they have to be changed every hour to hour and a half so he doesn't leak out with pockets he can go up to 3 hours before I have to change him.

I have 11 pockets, 10 AIOs, 12 fitteds with 10 covers (some will be used for expected LO so this number is almost double what you would need), and four nighttime pockets.  These can last me up to 4 days, but I have the extra days worth in case I get the diaps washed on day three, but dont get down to the cellar to dry or get until day 4.  I would say you would need more if you went fitted or prefolds since they seem to hold less pee.

I did the jillian's trial too and found out what styles and brands I did/did not like.  I think it was well worth the $10 to get an idea on what works for your LO.  GL to you.
