Multiples

Question for those who BF their multiples...

Hi ladies! I'm having a problem eating enough to keep up with my twins. I'm constantly hungry and in this low blood sugar-type state (hot, sweaty, etc). It's gotten particularly worse over the last week. They recently started STTN. They are not going through a growth spurt. I'm really close to starting to cut out a couple feedings during the day and giving formula. I feel so bad because I produce enough milk, they eat well, and are gaining well. Did anyone else have this problem? Any advice? Any supplements or products you'd recommend to increase my caloric intake? I thought I was eating/drinking enough, but maybe I'm overestimating. I had similar issues while nursing DS#1. Basically I just stopped pumping extra to store. Unfortunately I can't do that now because I'm not pumping extra. Help please! Sorry about the lack of paragraphs. Writing from my phone.

Re: Question for those who BF their multiples...

  • I didn't have this problem, but I would suggest maybe taking "ensure" or another brand of supplement drink to help keep your calories up and help with the hunger. :)

Hopefully someone who's encountered that can help you with another suggestion

  • I keep protein bars, granola bars and bottles of water next to my bed and eat them in the middle of the night if I'm hungry.  Also, heavier snacks in between meals (i.e. protein and carb together).  Ex could be peanut butter on toast or apples, etc.

  • This was me exactly!  I would eat snacks throughout the night.  I had to eat immediately after feeding them (every time) or I would get light headed and feel like I was going to pass out.  I would get hot and sweaty all the time.

It did get better.  I wish I could remember when it got better, but it was probably around 2-3 months.  I don't have any advice except, hang in there if you can and keep eating!

  • I also have to eat every time they eat. Even in the middle on the night. If I don't, I feel faint.

I also learned early that I have to eat a lot more protein than usual.

  • I go through peanut butter like crazy. It helps. I'd recommend protein bars, protein shakes, healthy snacks. Eat frequently too, don't wait to long before eating, even if it's just a snack. Good luck! Don't give up yet!

  • I drink a lot of 2% milk and eat a ton of fruit in addition to my usual caloric intake.
