Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Nursing mommas - I have a question

So, DD gave up EBF'ing around 10 months.  Now she loves to nurse herself to sleep.  I now give her 6 oz right before bedtime and put her in her crib and she cries.  So, I go in and nurse her and she takes about 5-10 minutes to fall asleep while nursing.  My question is - do you think my DD is getting any breast milk.  During naps she does the same thing.  She hardly sucks - I know she is just using me as a pacifyer.  WDYT?

Re: Nursing mommas - I have a question

  • I think she is getting milk even if she's tired and falling asleep. I called that comfort nursing. I really looked forward to that nursing session with Emma after I went back to work. I loved her latching and hugging me while she fell asleep. If it's the connection to you that she needs, I think that's wonderful. See if just nursing her to sleep and skipping the bottle will help. I miss that with Emma so much. Now that I'm pregnant? Please, she wants very little to do with me.

  • I love comfort nursing too!!  I lost my supply around 10 months, so if I nursed her before bed, she would for sure be awake like an hour later hungry for her last bottle.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!  Did your pregnancy dry your supply?  Why does Emma not want anything to do with nursing now?

Pregnancy did a lot to my supply. I'm envious of those pregnant who were able to keep their supply up. Once I became pregnant I think the taste of the milk changed and when Emma would latch on, she would hit me. She would unlatch and try to get away from me. I thought something was really wrong, like she was hurt. But I learned a month later, it was me. I was pregnant and that's the only thing I can think of that made her quit immediately.

  • Do you hear a gulf or does she swallow while nursing? She may be getting something. We're still BFing, but sometimes he continues sucking until he falls asleep.
