Stuttering?

Anyone have experience with stuttering?

DS has has developed a really bad stutter this week. This coincides with a huge language explosion too. Could it just be that his brain is going faster than his voice can get it out or should I be concerned?

Re: Stuttering?

  • We had a short period of time when Brenna stuttered, and I think it was for the word explosion reason you describe.  She could say so much, but her brain would get ahead of her and she would stutter as she searched for the word she was trying to get out.  It went away in about 2-3 weeks.  Now she says "ummmm" or "mmmm"  when she is word searching, but not too often.

  • Carson developed a fairly serious stutter at about 22 months (?).  He was already in speech therapy and his therapist said it was nothing to worry about unless it was happend with other behaviors (arm flapping, lip pursing, squinting or blinking of the eyes).  He is now 26 months and still struggles with it.  He's seeing a different speech therapist now who also has not shown concern.  I'm obviously no doctor, I'm just repeating what we were told by his therapists.  To be fair, Carson also has a few developmental issues which could also be exacerbating things.

I'd say if it's paired with the language explosion, that's probably the root of it and it's nothing to worry about.

  • If I remember correctly from my language path course, short-term stuttering is oftentimes just one way in which children "play with" language.  I wouldn't be concerned at all, yet, especially considering developmental age and the recent language explosion you referenced.
  • I would guess it is due to his language explosion because when we were out the other day you asked him to slow down and he was able to say what he wanted to without stuttering.  I would just keep an eye on it and remind him to slow down.  If it continues you can always call the pedi for advice.

  • Justin was doing this at the beginning of the summer.  DH and I were really concerned about it, but everything I read indicated that their mouth just could not keep up with their minds.  I had forgotten about it until you posted this.

I wouldn't worry, Justin's stutter went away as quickly as it arrived.

  • Thanks everyone. I figured that was the case, especially since every time he does it he's talking so fast he forgets who he's talking too/about and he always asks "What's the name again?"

This recent language explosion has been insane. Whenever I tell him something he doesn't want to hear he exclaims "That's not the truth mom!" or "That's so not cool mom!" He's too darn cute and he knows it.

He never.stops.talking. He's even talking in his sleep and it's usually a continuance of conversations he's had during the day. He exhausts me.
