Would you live in a home that

had a canal/dock in the backyard?  Not sure exactly how deep the water is but deep enough for boats to go in.  I am wondering if it is pretty irresponsible to even consider this with a 3 year old, 15 month old and baby on the way.  I would love to live on the water but having it literally right in our backyard scares me a little...TIA!

(This is just a home we are considering going to take a look at since we are outgrowing our condo)

  • I don't think it's irresponsible at all.  Fencing is a must around here.  I personally wouldn't b/c of bugs in the summer and b/c I have no boat and would need a boat and well, if I got a boat, I'd need a waverunner, and then waterskis, and then better bikinis, and well if i'm in better bikinis I'd need a personal trainer...

  • Teach your kids water safety, teach them to swim, and install a fence.  It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.  Kids can drown in fish ponds, they don't need deep water to get into trouble.  Oh, and just don't let them outside alone.

  • My cousin lives in a house like this. It wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me, but I would certainly put a fence up.

  • Living in Florida, the only reason I would not is mosquitoes.
  • We just looked at a house with a small pond in the back yard.  We didn't like the house anyway so it didn't matter.  If we had loved the house it wouldn't have been a deal breaker, but it's not something I would really want.  You can teach water safety and take all kinds of precautions but it's still a potential liability.
