Cloth Diapering

I'm still overwhelmed!!

Thanks for the links...I have read at length. I decided that all-in-ones are probably the way to go for us and want to try CDing at night first. Does this seems backwards? DS STTN and soaks his diaper. When he wakes up, he is "dry" but his pjs smell like stale urine and are somewhat damp...but not really (if that makes sense).

I am going to buy 3 or 4 all-in-ones and try at night (if you agree it isnt backwards for piloting). Are there any extra inserts I need? That's probably what I am must confused about..."packing" the CD.

I really appreciate any insight!!

  • I don't think it's backwards.  Hey, at least you're trying cds.  :)

AIOs normally don't need inserts, and some aren't stuffable, so make sure you get a brand that is (bg aios are stuffable) if you think your DS is going to wet through them..

What do I stuff them with? I'm seeing all this terminology that is confusing to a newbie....I'm seeing fleece, wool, prefolds.

Right when I was about to click "purchase" for my BGs....there is still alot I don't know!

  • Buy the bgs.  It helps when you can see them.

BG sells microfiber inserts you can use for extra absorbency.

  • Stuffing usually refers to an insert/doubler that you can add typically to a pocket style diaper that allows you to control how much absorption your diaper will have.  Doubler just means that it would be the second layer to add to a pocket, it can be exactly the same thing or it can be entirely different depending on what you need/want.  Definately make sure, if you go with the AIO, that it has the capability to add insert/doubler.

The types are the insert material that it's made out of, each with its own benefits and absorption ability.  For example, I beleive wool is the ultimate absorption, followed by hemp, then microfleece, bamboo, and lastly prefolds follow that.  Thickness can also be a factor in selecting an insert.  But the absorptancy depends on how many layers the insert has in it as well as the material.  For example, my Kawaii pocket MF (microfleece) inserts are three layers of MF, but the nighttime inserts have four layers of MF.  Some have a combination of two materials, one or two layers of something on the inside like wool, hemp, or bamboo and usually MF or bamboo on the outside.

GL to you.  It may take some adjustments to get the hang of cding, especially at night.  I would recommend trying two of a diaper first to see if its a match to you and your baby.  If your LO is a heavy wetter, you may want to keep an eye out on the recommendations for nighttime diaps for heavy wetters that other moms post about.

Hemp doublers are supposed to be great for heavy wetters. A lot of people do a microfiber on top of a hemp because the hemp holds more, but the microfiber absorbs faster. Just don't ever put microfiber directly against your little one's butt.

I'm going to be dumb and ask.....why?

  • Microfiber is almost too good at wicking away moisture- it can wick away the natural moisture in your babies' skin and can cause irritation. I only use microfiber inserts in my pockets- never as the layer right against the skin.
