Do/did you use mobiles?

Thinking about getting mobiles, in the hopes that they'll help the babies fall back to sleep when they wake early from naps and at night. 1) Am I dreaming? 2) Are mobiles overstimulating? And 3) If you have one and like it, please recommend.

Thanks!

Re: Do/did you use mobiles?

  • I have the one that shines the light on the mobile, then the top can be removed and shines the light on the ceiling.  I like it and I think it helps keep the babies from being bored and crying while they try to go to sleep.  I chose this one b/c I could just get 1 and they could share since it shines on the ceiling (I used the mobile top when they shared a crib).
  • I'm opposed to mobiles or anyone else that they might become dependant on to go to sleep.  No nuks, mobiles, music, sea horses or anything.  We only have a fan going all night under their cribs.  Thankfully my boys have always gone straight to sleep at night (nap time is a whooooole other issue), and I'm terrified of messing that up.

They do have a mobile over their PnP at daycare, and they seem to like that.

  • We just installed mobiles a couple of weeks ago, sincewe received them as gifts.  We use them to entertain the boys when I am taking a shower or I need a few minutes to take care of something without the babies.  I don't use them for sleep - I find the babies are fascinated by them and they try to stay awake to keep watching them.

As far as falling back asleep, my boys are just learning how to do that now.  I think they need less stimulation, not more to help them fall back asleep.  I wouldn't use the mobiles for that.

But if you do decide to buy one, I love the one I have from Tiny Love - it is very cleverly designed - not only do the animals go around in circles (like all mobiles), each animal also flips in place as it goes around the circle.  So it is doubly interesting to the babies.

    Good luck!

  • Hello, I have two of them & they've been on their cribs but I think I (well DH not me) has turned it on maybe a total of 10 times in the last 9 months.  They will be coming off the cribs soon b/c when they stand in their cribs they can reach them so it can be a hazard now. I look at them all the time & think to myself "why did I register for these I don't even use them?"  I probably don't use them b/c they have music boxes strapped to the side of their cribs that play lights & music much longer then the mobiles & DD's box actually has a montion sensor that I like it'll go off if she wakes up in the middle of the night (& no it never woke her up from going off b/c it's on very low).  Again I might have used the mobiles more if I didn't have the music boxes I find those more effective.

I like the mobile that was mentioned above about the lights on it.  Wish I would have known about those.

  • we had the dreams in sight projection mobiles and loved them - for all 3 boys.  they could see them in the dark- helped them fall asleep b/c it gave them something to concentrate on - was not too stimulating - and the music/white noise choices were nice, too.

  • We don't have any. They had one when they were in the NICU and scared the crap out of both the girls it only lasted a day and they took them away. We have a ceiling fan going all the time. I don't want them to get use to sound or moving things to fall asleep.

  • The FP precious planet mobile with projection is awesome. My boys loved it. It plays music, nature sounds, or heartbeat. It helped soothe them to sleep and also entertained them when they were awake and allowed me to get a couple of things done!

Def. get ones that are battery operated. We originally had baseball themed ones to match the nursery the you had to wind and while they love it when they were awake, it was a pain to have to wind it every 2 minutes.

We did have a mobile when DDs were little and shared a crib (prob used it until 6 months or so).  They seemed pretty indifferent to it.  I doubt they would work to put them back to sleep because you'd still have to turn it on.  We've gotten a ton more use out of our crib soothers (have both FP rainforest and aquarium ones).  We still have them in DDs' cribs and they love them!  They will sometimes play with them before they fall asleep, occasionally will turn them on when they wake up in the middle of the night (although not too often), and will play with them sometimes in the morning when they wake up.

  • FP Precious Planet....they love the projection.
  • I don't know that my kids ever fell asleep watching it, but it was a lifesaver when I needed to change one's diaper or get them dressed and keep the other one from having a meltdown.  They were mesmerized by the mobiles.

I don't regret having them, but probably wouldn't pay extra to get the ones that 'match' the bedding sets again.

  • I have the precious planet mobiles from fisher price and love them. Only one baby likes to fall asleep watching it, the other likes the heart beat sound with out the light on. Nice to have the option. My only complaint is the battery life, 4 d batt per mobile. Def need rechargables.
