Cloth Diapering

target and babies r us

I am due in February, first baby and plan to do CD.  I am registering at babies r us and target and it seems they carry mostly gerber and bumgenius- are these good brands?  Any recommendations on what to register for to "get me started"  Help!

Re: target and babies r us

  • I would register for diapers somewhere like jilliansdrawers.com.  That will give you a much better selection, plus Target and BRU don't have any of those diapers in store, so they will have to be bought online anyway.  Happy registering!

  • I've not used either but based on what I've read on the boards, I would say no on the Gerber. Chinese and Indian prefolds are more absorbant; the Gerber ones are burp cloths.

Honestly, I registered for dipes too (rumparooz) and thankfully, only got one diaper.  I had my mind set on those but once Baby Bee arrived, I started ordering one or two different dipes here and there and found that I really prefer a mix rather than one system.  If I had to do it again, I don't think I would register for diapers because I wouldn't want to take the chance that people would generously provide them all and then find out that the dipes didn't work for us or fit LO well.

  • BumGenius is a good brand, but I wouldn't register for more than one or two of any type... and quite honestly, BGs won't fit a newborn well, generally.

I registered for a lot of my diapers on Amazon. Nobody gave me any, but I was able to put a wide variety on there, and from various sites.

I thought RaR would be my preference too, and it's a great diaper. I own one. I don't think I'd buy any more really, though. It's not going to last my huge DD all the way through.

  • Gerber is only suitable for burp rags. Bum Genius are nice but I recommend registering at a CD store or Amazon for your CD needs. This was you can try a variety, and also register for other CD essentials like wetbags, cloth wipes, etc.

  • I didn't register for any dipes. I specified on my registries that I was going to cloth diaper, hoping to save people some money buying my sposies, but I would rather no one get overly generous and give us a bunch of one kind that doesn't work or something. Plus many of my guests aren't internet savvy.

I'm sure I'll get sposies and probably some Gerber prefolds both at the shower... I'll hang on to the sposies to use as needed and give away what we haven't used when baby outgrows them, and use the prefolds for burp cloths.

  • Bum Genius is (IMO) a good starter diaper for new parents/new to cloth people.  I did register for some of the BGs on my Target registry and did not receive any as gifts, but it allowed me to purchase some with the completion discount (which, to be honest, you can get even better deals online with many of the diaper shops anyhow).

I added them mostly to make the point that we were using cloth.  We still got a bunch of disposos, and for the first month, we did use them while we tested out which diapers we liked and which ones to stock up on.   You might want to check out the diaper trial from Jillian's Drawers.  I didn't like the newborn trial, but if I had waited a couple of weeks, he would have fit in the OS diapers and I could have made better use of the trial! Just a suggestion.
