2nd Trimester

Weight Issue?

I'm 23 weeks today. At my very first appointment (around 7-8 weeks). I weighed 175. Since then i have only weighed 170-175. I am very noticeably pregnant (baby bump, breasts, etc...) so I don't understand why I haven't gained anything. I eat plently a day (a lot of little meals). My OB-GYN has never brought it up but the more I think about it and read online what the normal weight gain is I start to get worried a bit. If anyone has any personal advice on this please help. This is my first pregnancy so I have yet to figure all of this out.

THANKS!!!

Re: Weight Issue?

  • If you were overweight before being pregnant you dont need to gain that much.

Even so, I wasn't overweight and with my first pregnancy I didnt gain anything until 22 weeks.

Weight gain picks up in late 2nd tri and 3rd tri.

as long as your doc is not concerned, dont worry.

  • Ditto previous post. I was not overweight and did not start gaining until around 22weeks.

  • I have not gained much either and my doc also hasn't discussed any concerns either. I wouldn't worry for that very reason but if you want, you could start drinking an instant breakfast or ensure drink along with your breakfast in the morning to add additional calories, proteins and nutrients. Don't worry...the weight will come soon. Now THAT we can be sure of :)

  • my body has been rearranging itself quite a bit.  my waist is thicker (i've only gained 6 pounds, yet i just barely fit into pants that i wore when i was 15 pounds heavier than i am now).  as long as your OB isn't nagging you about your weight, i wouldn't worry about it.

  • who says 175 is overweight? lol 175 is average according to bmi calculators for a woman who is 5 ft 9in-10in.

  • I have lost 7 pounds since I found out I was pregnant, and I'm on the heavy side. I have a friend who was extremely heavy when she concieved and she ended up losing over 40 pounds during her pregnancy.

It's something to do with our metabolisms speeding up for the pregnancy. That and I can say I've been eating healthier since I found out.

  • Definitely talk to your doctor at your next appointment. However, it may not be anything to worry about. I was overweight before I got pregnant, and the doctor is happy about how little I've gained (eight pounds so far).

  • I think you're doing fine! I am very overweight, (ok, why sugar coat it, Im obese!) so my doc told me I only needed to gain about 10-15lbs this whole pregnancy.

  • With my first I was arond 175 when I got pregnant and I lost weight until I was 20 weeks. Then gained 27lbs from 20-41 weeks. Your doc hasn't said anything because there's nothing for you to worry about. It's perfectly normal to lose some weight during pregnancy.

This time around I was 138 when I got pregnant and I've already gained 11lbs!! AHH.. SOO not used to this.. LOL

  • I'm only 17 weeks, but I haven't gained anything either.  However, like pp said, I was overweight (thanks to the 60 lbs I gained in my first pregnancy and didn't completely lose!) and feel like I don't need to gain as much this early.  My doctor isn't concerned (yet).  If your doc isn't concerned, I wouldn't be either!

  • i weighed about 185 when i first found out, and i am 5'4". I think that classifies me as obese, even despite losing 65lbs before getting pregnant!

I weighed 200 at my last appointment and my OB isn't concerned at all. She said she wants me to gain between 25-30lbs, but she 'would prefer nothing more if you can help it'. That gives me about 15 more lbs for the rest of the pregnancy. Now that I am feeling better, I can eat healthier and exercise more. In the beginning,I couldn't stomach much more than breads and french fries.

Your body has a funny way of doing exactly what it needs to do. I lost weight in the beginning, but it all evened out. Don't worry! I am sure your doc would have said something if it was an issue.
