Help with hospital bag please...

I am packing my bag and I feel like I am missing something.  Here is what I have:

socks

nursing bras

underwear to go home in

clothes for myself and hubby

outfit for baby

nipple shield

nuks

toiletries

camera/batteries

phone chargers

computer

gift for son

snacks

pillows

Is there anything else that I am missing?  Things I don't really need?  You would think I would remember from first son but that isn't the case.  Thanks for the help!

  • I brought a towel the hospital ones were tiny

  • I also brought a robe and slippers to roam the halls with.

  • I second the robe and slippers. I also brought chapstick, and it really came in handy after breathing through so many contractions!

  • To be honest, you may not need all of that...for the first day, I just lived in the hospital gown (everything was too gross and I was too tired to wear anything else). Then, I just wore some of my own clothes the second day. Bring music (not sure if that's on your list). Oh, and my boppy was one thing I didn't bring initially, but it was really helpful for breastfeeding once my husband got it from home.
  • If you plan on breastfeeding bring lanolin. I forgot it and my hospital didn't have it (big hospital in a big city, I was shocked). My nips were bleeding by the time my mom was able to bring me some the next morning.

  • I second the chapstick.  That was definitely needed.

  • as pp's have mentioned, chapstick and lanolin.  I had my DH get both of those for me on trips home to feed the kitties.

  • Ok...lurking from 9-12 bored...but had to post this suggestion...

Depends...my friend said they are so much better afterwards than wearing the big bulky pad and mesh underwear.

I can't wait to try it when we have another baby!

    Good luck with your labor!

  • I'd suggest bringing baby wipes.  The ones they provide are horrible.

Ditto the chapstick.  That was a lifesaver.

  • Things not on your list that I used:

    - boppy

    - chapstick

    - hair ties

    - nursing tank (rather than nursing bra)

It would have been nice to have my own towel from home.  Definitely glad I had my own pillow. I wore the mesh undies home (and actually took some extras home with me), and never wore my robe/socks/slippers (I was hot all the time).

  • I highly recommend bringing some sugar free hard candies (my mouth got really dry and the meds they gave me in my IV for GBS made my mouth taste nasty), a book, a roll of quarters for DH to use for snacks, and DH said next time he is bringing his own blanket because he hated the ones they provided.

  • About all I used was our own personal pillows(the hospital's sucked), my kindle, laptop, phone charger, bobby, and nice thick socks!

Other then that I hung out in the gowns, they were not bad, (and I kind of wish I swiped one to wear at night)

Hair Brush, and tooth brush are a must.

Also if your DH is staying the night with you. Make sure he has slippers and PJ's. Mine forgot to anything, so he slept in his scrubs he got from the nursing staff

  • I second the hair tie/headband and baby wipes (my hospital provided dry ones that had to be wet prior to use).  I preferred Always overnight pads to the big pads the hospital provided.  I also wore my own clothes as soon as I was able to shower...made me feel more comfortable.
  • I ended up with an unplanned c-section. The pants I planned to wear home would have rubbed on my incision. I was glad that the maternity jeans I wore to the hospital fit comfortably. You may want to consider this when deciding what to bring to wear home.

I was glad I brought lip balm, my laptop, hair ties, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, toiletries for the shower, pacifier for baby (although the nurses were not happy with me giving it to her on the 3rd day). I liked the mesh undies and actually wore them at home afterward for over a week.
