Being a weather junkie, I'm being a good kid and practicing what I preach and am sitting in my cluttered basement. Luckily, our old couches are down here so I'm relatively comfortable--just bored. So, sorry for the random post.
How's the weather where you are? If you are under a tornado warning and are at work, do they make you go take shelter somewhere?
The university I work at recently set up a phone alert system for severe weather and other things. I got a phone call when the tornado warning went into effect, I'm pleased to see it works.
Re: Anyone else under a tornado warning?
Uh oh, where are you? Better check the weather....
Yikes, that's the system that is supposed to be on us tomorrow. I'll be thinking about all of you in it today-be safe!!
It's raining here, but the sky is a light gray, so we're not worried about anything more serious. And we know tornados, it's MN baby!
ETA: ok, it's really windy here too, but it's always windy in MN!
I'm in central ohio and we are under a watch. Right now it doesn't look too bad though, just a bit windy.
We don't take shelter under a warning but I always pay attention to what is going on outside my window, just in case.
on twitter they are calling it a #chiclone which totally sounds like something you would get at Dairy Queen.
I love severe weather and we get a lot of it in MA but not today. Batten Down the Hatches and stay safe.
It's headed my way
I am super terrified of storms, especially when there are tornado warnings. I am at work (I work at a college too) and I work in the basement anyway. Plus we have these underground tunnels... so I'll be safe enough.
But I'm worried about my house because we had trees that needed trimmed anyway (over power lines and close to the house) and a chimney that needed repaired because it's about to fall over. And I worry because my cat is home alone. Before I left I told her to take cover if a storm came, lol. I'm a lunatic.
Hope you stay safe!

I am a little worried about my cat and dogs too. Our neighbor has a huge pine tree that looks as if it will fall onto my house with any little burst of wind.
I'm debating on wether to drive to class or not. I don't want to get caught up in the storms. I mean, it doesn't seem too bad right now, even though there is a tornado warning...but you know Michigan...things change in a matter of minutes!
Don't be too terrified of storms!! If you play it safe, they won't hurt you! Being in the basement is the best place during a tornado warning--but even in a tornado warning it doesn't mean that there IS a tornado, and if there is, it probably isn't near you. Sure, it could be, but mostly you'll be okay!
I worry about the trees around our house, too. We have a giant branch right over our bedroom. I don't know how old the tree is and if that will snap off and fall onto the roof. Our cats sleep on our bed a lot, so I worry about them, too! Luckily, they both came down here with me.
I usually don't even bother coming down here during a warning, but with the high winds, thought it'd be a good idea! During one storm this summer, our neighbor kids who don't have a great basement came over at midnight--there parents were at a festival downtown. We had friends over, it was storming pretty good, and we heard a knock on the door at midnight. Freaked us out a little!
I'm in SW Michigan. Looks like the more severe stuff is gone for now. Anyone else getting this weather, stay safe!

Yes, tornado and severe wind/weather advisories until tomorrow at 7pm. I'm in Southern Wisconsin and the wind is blowing around like a mofo. They're saying 60mph winds today. It was raining pretty hard and super foggy this morning on my way to work.
I just heard on the news, there's a few power lines down.
That's headed our way. We have all those high wind warnings, too. Shouldn't be stormy tomorrow, just windy. Owning a house and worrying about what it might do to trees--and what the trees might do to my house--is what worries me!
Tornado warning done, for now. It's going to be a crazy day today and tomorrow. I have a meteorology minor, and I love severe weather as long as it doesn't hurt anyone or damage anything!

This past weekend we were under a warning while at our gymnastics meet. We had to stop the meet, and huddle all the gymnasts and coaches into this tiny room. Yeah, when you change the game plan on 9 year olds it really freaks them out. Not the best day.
AW - But we did have a great meet! 9.9 on floor what what!!
Congrats on the great scores!!!
Yeah, kids don't like when plans change, especially for something scary like that!

Did you decide to go? I know what you mean, though! If I didn't have to go anywhere later, I wouldn't. I know the school (usually) does a good job when there is severe weather there--like I said, their emergency alert thing worked, and one of my international students said a public safety car was driving around during another storm with a loudspeaker telling everyone to take shelter--but I heard that during one storm this past summer, one building made staff and students go OUTSIDE and across the street for shelter!! The library does a good job making people go downstairs for tornado warnings.
Looks like the storms have passed for now, but you are right about the weather changing fast! I think it's even worse over here than it was back home on the east side with the lakes having an effect on anything coming through!

My parents are from MN and I had to laugh when my dad said 60 mph winds today. Where I live now we are under a cold jet stream so it is really windy through the winter 6 out of 7 days of the week. 60+ mph gusts is something that just happens. Sunday the new US Bank got blown away, literally. Demolished. My patio furniture (not plastic) was up against the fence at the far side of the yard. I still went running outside. You learn to live with it I guess. But we did get snow yesterday, and the mountain is white! I'm ready to play Christmas music!
BTW, don't take tornado warnings lightly...we always did growing up in Northern MN. They rarely hit there. Well my hometown got hit by a cluster of 3 F4's. The destruction was amazing, I can't believe no one died. My mom barely made it in the basement, she thought it was just going to be a bad thunderstorm. That was an eye opener.
Ok where are you? You better not be West of me because I am NOT ready for snow yet.
We were under a tornado watch last night and had thunderstorms, but now it is just a high wind warning.
Wow. I'm serious, that is my worst nightmare. I have always been terrified of tornadoes. I could never watch the beginning of the Wizard of Oz, and I have tornado dreams all the time. If I were home right now, my a$$ would be in the basement pacing and shaking!

That made me laugh! I would do the same.
California is pretty boring. No tornadoes here. We have earthquakes, so no warnings for us. Stay safe everyone!

YIKES!!!! That's scary stuff. Weather IS serious business, and that's why I did take shelter! If there is a tornado it DOES hit somewhere, and if it happens to be a house or a town, not just an open field, they are extremely destructive. It doesn't mean that when there is a tornado warning, there will be an actual tornado or that it will be where you are, but if it is, it's very dangerous. It's better to be safe than sorry. I'm sorry you two were involved in those tornadoes, but I'm glad you were safe. You really shouldn't wait until you see something, because they can form in the blink of an eye, move quickly, and change direction without warning. And, if it's at night, you definitely aren't going to see it coming.
The city I live in now was hit by a tornado back in 1980. I don't know the extent of the damage, but I do have a copy of the newspaper covering the event--we found it in our basement after we moved in. Definitely something to keep and remember.
I'm so not ready for snow!!!!!

we are on a watch and have been since morning. warning's are south / west of us but it appears a warning may be in our afternoon future..
I always have tornado dreams, too! They freak me out!
No tornado warning for us, but we are under a strong wind advisory and storms later!
Oh, no! Stay safe, lady! Update us when you can!
So I was typing that last message when the alarms went off. We have underground tunnels under our university that connect all the buildings, so they made an announcement for everyone to go to them and there was just this huge sea of people. Did I mention I'm a little claustrophobic?! But we got the all clear to come back up after about 30 mins. DH is in our town and says so far things are ok. I was def saying some prayers down there! Not cool!

First, I'm glad you're okay!! I may have freaked out a bit for you?
Second, why do they have underground tunnels?? That's freakin' awesome!
Aw, thanks! I was freaking out a little for me too, lol. Every noise I heard down there I was like, "OMG, the building's being torn apart above us!"
We are one of the most accessible campuses in the country for people with disabilities (I work in Disability Services office, coincidentally). The tunnels provide a smooth road for wheelchairs, visually impaired students with canes, etc. without having to go outside, over grass and the paths. And they're awesome when it rains because you don't have to go outside to get between buildings! When it rains, there isn't a soul outside. I don't know if the original purpose was for people with disabilities or not, but it's pretty cool!
Now I am headed out to get some lunch because what I brought needs microwaved...and sewage blew up out of our sink next to the mircrowave

I love severe weather too.
I saw the tornado that touched down in Iowa City in the spring of 2006...no one was hurt, but there was a lot of damage.
We were under a tornado watch overnight last night, but nothing came of it, thank goodness. Now it's just high wind warnings. It's rainy and super windy here...what a nasty day!
