Drawbacks to Mini Cribs?

DH and I live in a townhouse and the secondary bedrooms are rather small. I was looking at mini cribs online and they seem perfect! We have enough room for a real crib, but a mini crib would give us more room to move around and plus they cost less.

Anybody have experience with these? What are the drawbacks?

  • I looked into one for the same reason, but decided against it.  It's harder to find bedding for them, and more importantly it sounds like tall babies outgrow them quickly.  I didn't want to buy a mini crib, just to have to buy a full size one 6-9 months later because baby isn't ready for a toddler bed yet.  My husband and I are both tall, so it seemed like a good idea for us to just go with the full size.  Good luck!

  • A full-size one that turns into a toddler bed will last a lot longer. But you could always start out with a Pack'n'Play or a co-sleeper, then move up to a full-size crib later.

  • they will outgrow a mini crib most likely before they are ready for a toddler bed.

We took our oldest to Aruba when he was 18 months old, and all the resort had was mini cribs.  He was so cramped in that thing that we ended up pulling a mattress on the floor for him to sleep on instead.  There was no way he was sleeping in the mini crib.

  • I read a lot about them because we also have very small bedrooms. DH and I are both short (5'6 and 4'11) and come from short families, so we are not worried about our LO growing out of it too fast.

What I was concerned with, though, was the construction/sturdiness of them. They all looked pretty cheap, especially the part that holds up the mattress.

Also, there are not very many styles to choose from, and I wasn't excited about the look of any of them that I saw.

What we ended up doing was using masking tape on the floor and measuring out different ways the crib could go in the room, both for a full-size crib and a mini-crib. And even though the full size crib will be a tight squeeze, that's what we ended up choosing. I just didn't want to compromise on quality.
