Re: super important majorly disputed issue ( poll inside)

  • I said no, but I believe the natural stuff does need to be kept in the fridge.

  • If by "real" you mean natural, yes, it is not shelf stable.
  • Yes if it is natural. Skippy or whatever doesn't need to be.

  • I don't refrigerate my natural/organic PB.
  • Depends on how long it takes to use the jar.  All nut oils go rancid in 3-6 months.  We go through a small jar of peanut butter in about 6 weeks, so we never refrigerate.  If I were buying Costco size jars, they would go in the fridge.

  • Trader Joe's says on the jar to keep refrigerated after opening.

  • Nope, not even the natural stuff!  I found out that the only reason they say to refrigerate the natural stuff is to keep it from separating, but I'd rather stir it than try to spread cold, hard pb, so I keep it in the cabinet.

  • Nope,. I don't even refrigerate the natural stuff. It's too hard to spread when cold. But FWIW, we go through a jar pretty quickly once opened. It's not like it stays in the cabinet for months on end...
  • I used to.  As a kid, we kept everything in the fridge, including bread and cereal (something you learn when you first live in the projects).  But H pointed out how much easier it is to spread if you leave it in the pantry, and he is so right.  Ours never lasts that long, anyway.
