Questions for moms of twins...

Hi ALL,

I just had my baby shower yesterday and I could not believe the amount of clothes we got...we got tons of NB clothing so I was wondering how much to keep and how much to return for bigger clothing...Everyone says they grow out of NB stuff so quickly...how many times a day would you say you change your twins outfits?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Questions for moms of twins...

  • My boys were in NB outfits for a good six weeks. Since average birth weights for twins are smaller than for singletons (5 lbs 6 oz, I believe) they're likely to be in NB clothing for longer than the average baby.

In the NB stage, my boys each went through 1-3 outfits in a typical day. They wore a lot of gowns with the elasticized bottoms (made diaper changes SO easy!) and footed sleepers with zippers when we were around the house.

  • Thank you so much for your input! I got alot of gowns which I love..everyone says there so easy to change them in.

I figured they would need to be changed often...it just looks like so much but I have to remember there are two!lol

     Thank you again!

  • I hardly got any clothes at my shower, so I didn't have that problem.  I also bought very few NB clothes myself, b/c I wasn't sure how big the babies would be when they were born.  Mine were born at 35w6d and wore preemie sizes for about a month.  Then they could start wearing NB size and DD moved out of that at 10 wks, DS moved out at 8wks.  Really, all mine wore during the NB phase were onesies.  We hardly left the house, thus no need to dress them up.  Plus, they spit up/peed/pooped thru outfits several times a day some days, so onesies were easiest.    If you can, I'd return some of them for a gift card/store credit, so you'll have a better idea of how big they'll be and what season to buy for.

  • Our babies are a little over a week old and we just had to go out and buy some more newborn sleepers.  It's too cold right now to keep them in onesies... which we got a ton of.  One of our girls spits up a lot, so she will sometimes go through multiple outfits a day.  To avoid doing laundry every single day and be able to have some outfits upstairs to change, and some downstairs... we ended up needing quite a bit of sleepers in the end.

  • They were in preemie clothes for the first 2-3 weeks. They were in newborn until almost 3 months.

Gowns are great but they can be a PITA to get on if the material is worn. Sleepers with zippers are amazing and we still use them constantly in 0-3.

If I can give you one tip, it's really pay attention to the seasons. The girls were born in June so we got a ton of summer clothes. Living in New England, we've already have frost advisory nights and 45 degree days. Make sure you have the right season of size clothes.

  • My boys were born at 35w and were in preemie clothes for 2 weeks. They're still in NBs but will probably outgrow them next week. They mostly wear sleepers and onesies. We only have a few cute outfits (like 3 per kid) but I don't go out much to places that they need to be dressed up. I like the footies since it's cool at night now, but my boys have outgrown the length in most of them, even though they could still fit width wise. I prefer the sleepers w/o the feet now just b/c they last longer. I love gowns too. Anything that's comfy to sleep in and easy for diaper changes is great. Sleep sacks are the bomb if you're having a winter baby. As far as how many to keep - I don't normally have to change them multiple times a day. Once every other day or so one will pee on himself. I'd plan for 2.5 outfits a day if I were you.
  • I had WAY too many 0 to 3 month clothes.  They wore NB for about a month, then on to 0 to 3. (they were 7lb4oz and 6lb15oz).  The problem with most of the clothes people bought me is that they were cute, but not that functional.  For the 1st 3 months or so I preferred outfits that didn't have to go over their heads.  Now they are 4 months and its easy to pull stuff over their heads, but in the beginning they hated stuff going over their heads.  I ended up doing a load of baby laundry every other day, so I really didn't need that many clothes.  Plus we didn't really go anywhere at first.  People bought me some bigger sizes, but they will be completely wrong for the season.  ie, we will be getting into 6 to 9s soon, and all I have are summer outfits in those sizes :(

  • so I guess what I was trying to say is, keep the tags on stuff.  You don't need that many outfits.  I'm probably weird, but if their outfit was still clean, they wore it at night under their swaddle.

  • Oh yeah, I meant to add, I think it's good to have some preemie clothes on hand too. My boys were 6lbs10oz and 6lbs7oz at birth (and each lost 7 oz in the hospital) but they were SWIMMING in Newborn clothes the first 2-3 weeks! So they wore a mix of what little preemie I had, and NB, those first few weeks. I remember DH and I trying to dress them to take them home from the hospital and we just kept laughing at how ridiculously huge their NB clothes were. Fortunately my cousin had sent a few preemie outfits, so they wore those for their hospital pics and going home.

  • My girls were born at 36 weeks 2 days and were able to wear the 0-3 month stuff right away even tho it was a tad bit big at first...they grew into them fast and they were barely able to get a couple wears out of 2 cute newborn sleepers my sister had gotten them...also after the first couple days I got smart and would pretty much just put htem in footed jammies...I had my MIL run out and get a couple packages of the cotton ones...they hated gowns and everything else was so much work to dress them...
  • mine were in NB for about 6wks...I find they spit up more now and didn't require as many changes in the beginning  ( think that may also have to do with being BF in the beginning - they are FF now).  Also after they were born they were given even more NB clothes and we didn't go out much with them the 8 wks, so they were mostly in onsies and PJs all the time, so they didn't really need any of the cute newborn clothes that they got.
