Cloth Diapering

new to cloth w/ toddler--help with poop

I posted here a couple weeks ago about switching to cloth with my 15-month-old.  I want to thank everyone who gave me encouragement and information, you were all a huge help!  We tried the Jillian's Drawers trial, liked it, and have ordered some additional pocket diapers (mostly snaps).

My one problem still is the poop issue... I'm not sure how else to describe it except when we shake a poopy diaper over the toilet--well, nothing comes off of it.  It's mush and just sticks there.

I tried some of the liners that come with Jillian's Drawers and wasn't crazy about them, they felt rough to me somehow though maybe that's silly.  Our toilets currently can't use the sprayers (you need a flexible tube connecting toilet to wall and we don't have that).  How do you manage poopy cloth diapers?  I'm open to having a plumber adjust our toilet so we can attach a sprayer but am wondering about other options first.

Thanks again for any advice!  We could use it.

  • My son is 15 months old too!  We sometimes use the liners that you are referring to, but if we don't use those I've had to use a plastic knife to scrape the poop off into the toilet.  Since DS only really poops 1-2 times a day it doesn't really bother me.  I usually stick a liner in his first diaper of the day and he often poops within an hour of waking up so that's usually the only diaper that I stick a liner in.  I've heard you can wash those liners and reuse them a few times, they might be softer after that.

  • I take my hanging wet bag to the bathroom and hang it open on the door, put the insert in it, plop any from the shell I can, then swish and scrape with an old nylon spatula.  Then, I just drop the diaper in the bag and store the spatula in the toilet brush caddy.

I may or may not have been known to run them under a fast kitchen faucet and then use the disposer. Whether I have or not depends on exactly how disgusting you find that. :P

Different dipes make a huge difference to me. BGO's are the worst for sticking and needing to be scraped. The ones with microfleece are the easiest to "plop" off. Consequently I'm trying to thin my BGO stash and replace.

I'm not sure if I find this hilarious or gross!!!!!  But it really made me LOL...I could imagine the look on DH's face if he came home and caught me rinsing Ellie's diapers in the kitchen sink.
