Anyone try a toddler on a train?

We have Friday off of school for fall break and I was thinking of taking the South Shore from South Bend to Chicago.  This is about a 3 hour train ride though and I'm not sure how Madelyn would do being 21 months old and all.  Has anyone tried this?  I'm nervous to drive into the city...

Re: Anyone try a toddler on a train?

  • We've always done the day out with Thomas and J LOVED it. (though he's a boy, Thomas was there and most importantly: It was only a 30 minute ride after the hour long car ride)

But I think if you get her interested in trains and bring some other entertainment (color books, snacks....) she'd be ok.

I've done this sans kids and it's a pretty long trip.  I imagine Andrew would freak out from boredom, but he's younger... :)  He doesn't like to sit for very long.

  • I think it would be like a 3 hour plane ride, you'd have to have plenty of activities and maybe a dvd player or something.  The other thing is once you got to the city, how would you get around?  Or would the train drop you off where you want to go?
  • I did the SS with DD, but she was younger- maybe 10-11 months? Can't remember. But the nice thing about train vs. car is that she can get up and move around from time to time as long as it's not packed. I agree, bring a coloring book or doll or something she enjoys, and some goldfish/bagel/cheerios/whatever her weakness is, and I think you'd be ok.

    I hate driving into Chicago!
