Cloth Diapering

Everything seems too big!

My 2-wk-old son weighed 6 lbs 6 oz at birth; the one-size diapers we have were way too big.  Even the newborn-size Huggies we got from the hospital were too big or just not cut right and leaked every time.  A friend sent us some XS pro-wrap covers and newborn-size prefolds and they leak.  Any suggestions for getting them to contain the liquid (maybe we need to wash them more to soften and absorb more, I don't know)?  Or for something that fits the little guy?  It's not like he's a preemie, it seems like an XS should fit; XS Fuzzi Bunz seem way too big, too.  Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Dd was a preemie and only 5lbs when we brought her home.  We used up the pampers that the hospital sent home with us and then used newborn prefolds with xs thirsties covers.

  • we did the prefolds and covers on our skinny baby (7+a little at birth, but he dropped to just over 6...we used NB 'sposies the first week because we hadn't ordered our PF's yet since he was early!)  How many times did you wash them, and in what?  How are you securing them (snappi?)...and how often are you changing?  With the prorap covers, you should be able to get a nice snug fit and not be leaking out with the prefolds.  Have you put any diaper cream or vaseline or anything like that on him?  that may affect the absorbency of the prefolds, too...

  • Lil' Joeys are really small.  Also Monkey Doodlez newborn size.  KL0s might be fluffy, but they will probably contain everything; we used them with Bummis super brite covers that are for 4-9 lbs.  BG 3.0 XS are very small also.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

  • My baby was only 6.5 lbs at birth, and we used orange GMDs PFs and XS Thirsties covers.  PFs are easily adjustable to fit even the tiniest babies.  Are you using a Snappi?  Are you changing every 1-2 hours?  You also may be right about needing to wash them more to increase absorbency.  We boiled our PFs to prep them.  My baby also fit the XS Sposoeasy AIO when she was tiny.
  • FB are cut bigger, so the XS might start to fit soon, but I'm not surprised it's too big (it took 3 months for the size SM to fit our son who was 8lb at birth).

Are you using a snappi with your prefolds? That will really help contain things. I wasn't fond of Proraps covers, but maybe a different cover will suit you better. Bummis or Thirsties covers are ones I recommend. Fitteds in XS should work well to contain things when paired with a well-fitting cover. I like Thirsties fitteds, but they aren't really available anymore. Kissaluvs are also popular, but didn't work well for us.
