I think granite or other manufactured looking countertops will stay in style. I am sure stainless and glass tile with shift in time. I do get sick of everything looking the same on those shows. Boring!
I love the look of granite countertops but cant stand stainless appliances...I would be spending all my time cleaning off spots & finger prints. And glass tile just looks so damn cheap.

My favorite verse!
I don't necessarily hate any of those things...but I will agree that everything is starting to look the same on those shows. And I roll my eyes everytime I hear a "house hunter" whine that they really would "prefer" granite and act as though a perfectly functional and fine kitchen would have to be gutted the second they sign the closing papers.

We've had stainless appliances since we bought and remodeled the house 6 years ago. We bought the stainless pre-kids but I specifically made DH get me the ones that have the protective thing on them so we don't get fingerprints- lol!
I'm with Lari though- if we didn't have that thing on them to prevent the fingerprints we NEVER would've gotten them!
They've been so convinced that granite-stainless is the ONLY desirable option that every show becomes the same.
I actually like some vintagey looking stuff every once in a while, instead of minimalist-ultrasleek-modern. I think it's cold and impersonal. I want a house that you can live in.

hate to burst the bubble, but of course it's fakey fakey and reading from a script, b/c they film House Hunters AFTER the homebuyer has closed on the house they pick.
I have granite and stainless....and I actually agree with you. I don't think ours in like the ones you see on the shows....only because Joe and I are anything BUT sleek and modern!
My natural oak cabinets overpower the granite. And the warm khaki/gold colored tile backsplash adds to the warmth.
I LOVE the granite (look, ease of use/clean, etc) and wouldn't trade that but I would totally do away with the damn stainless appliances. We toyed with the idea of doing black --- and I wish we had. When we redid the kitchen (early 2003), stainless was the thing to have. Although it still is, I think some people are actually getting smart about it and opting for black instead.
I do agree that all the houses tend to look the same on House Hunters. Still so much fun to watch though!

I always laugh at the people who act like they need a kitchen remodel ASAP because the counter tops aren't the right shade.

Mom to two awesome boys (9.11.06 and 12.10.09) and one beautiful baby girl (3.28.11)
I have dark granite, cherry cabinets to the ceiling, stainless apps, and hard wood floors and I adore it. ...but my sister had white cabinets, black granite and dark hardwoods and I LOVE it. I so wish I had gone that route when we built! I keep telling myself there is always the next house to get it just right ;o)
That's okay. Not everyone has to love every trend. But regarding granite as a trend, I have to say I think it is here to stay. We just switched out our tile with granite and it is so much better than tile. It is just extremely easy to keep clean and it is handy for rolling dough etc. It is the best kitchen surface I have ever had as far as functionality and I think it's beautiful (it's a natural stone, how could it not be?).
Although I agree that every house on HGTV is beginning to look the same, I love our dark cherry cabinets, granite, and stainless steel. I actually like that you can see the fingerprints on the stainless steel because it is just so easy to clean. I can take a clorox wipe and it's gone in an instant. My sister has a white refridgerator and it looks gross and dingy no matter how much she cleans the handles!
However, I have to agree with the pp, that I love the white cabinets and the French Country look. That is the look I'd love in our next house when the boys are older and, hopefully, less messy. I can dream, right?
I love, love, love my granite countertops. SO easy to clean....and this is coming from a home where the countertops were ceramic tile/fake travertine that was installed before we moved in as a "remodel". They were so rough, uneven, hard to clean (grout...is gross!). I'm not a fan of stainless appliances that can be touched by little hands. Our fridge and diswasher are "built ins" meaning you can't tell them from the cabinets. However, our gas stove, double ovens, ice machine and microwave are stainless.
One trend that I've noticed (around here at least) is honed marble counter tops. I get that some people love that look, but it's NOT attractive or functional in my opinion. But that's just me.
I also don't think granite will go out of style anytime soon. Ours are so easy to clean and look so nice--- especially compared to the old formica countertops we had when we moved in.
The thing I don't get about people's reactions to the kitchens is their insistence that it already has granite. That's one of the easiest things to change about a house, and it really wasn't THAT expensive to do. Same thing with the appliances. Plus, then we got to pick what we wanted.

Sorry bubs. It's true. I know 2 people who have been on it.

Agreed. I am sick to death of stainless steel, dark stained wood, glass and granite...clean lines, modern...
I want to see character in a home. And colour.
