Elliot as a girl's name

Hi ladies,

What do you think of the name Elliot for a girl? We are thinking on Elliot Grace (nickname Elle). My family thinks I'm a nut and that it's way too much of a boy's name. There's other names I like, but not as much as Elliot-- what do you think?

 TIA!

Re: Elliot as a girl's name

  • Honestly, it makes me think of Elliot from Scrubs, which would be a good association, if the character hadn't explained in one of the first episodes that she has 2 sisters and her dad wanted a boy, so they gave her a boys name.

I do like the name Elle...

  • I also think Elliott from Scrubs, but it screams BOY

  • Haha, I guess it's a good thing I've never seen Scrubs!
  • I think it is cute because of Scrubs.  She was so funny!!

  • My suggestion is just name her Elle, there's no point in naming her Elliot if you're just going to be calling her Elle all the time. to me Elliot is a boys name.

  • Elliot is a boys name. I realize people use it for girls these days, but it is still a boys name. Just name her Elle if that is what you will call her anyways.

  • I love it for a girl... I actually had a guy recommend the name Elliot for our little girl.. that's how I heard about it.

  • All I think of when I hear the name Elliot is E.T. I hated that movie when I was a kid and that's all I can associate the name with haha.

I love Elle though, so you should just name her that.

  • Elliot is a great name! For a boy only though. Like PP, why not just name her Elle? It's a perfectly good girl name and you wouldn't be stealing one from the boys!!

  • I think of Elliot Stabler from SVU.  Whenever I hear the name, I think of the bald captain guy saying "Elliot, my office!" or him flying off the handle.

  • I like the name, but not for a girl.

    This, exactly.

    Also, it's a BOY'S name.

  • I know this is random, but my first Cabbage Patch doll was a girl, and her birth certificate said Elliott on it. I called her Ellie because I thought of it as a boy's name. However, since then, I've heard of it as a girl's name a few times. I much, much prefer it for a boy, but it's definitely moving its way into the "gender neutral" category, IMO.

  • Ditto the Scrubs reminder, but I don't mind it.  In fact, all boy-turned-girl names had to start out as "Eww, that's a boy's name," at some point.  Go for it, especially since it has the obviously feminine nn as an alternative.

  • In my opinion it's a boy name, but I like the nickname. Could you just go with the nickname as her 1st name?
  • I've watched scrubs but that wasn't what first came to mind. However, I really prefer Elle or Ella for a girl.

  • Hate it.

Elliot is a strong boy name to me and I hate that people are using it on a girl.

  • I hate it for a girl.  Elliot(t) is a strong boy's name, and it should stay a boy's name.

If you like Elle, Ella, or Ellie, use any of those.  But please don't use Elliot for a girl.

  • Love love love for a girl! I know the most adorable little girl named Elliott.  I say use it :)

  • I really don't think it is that strong of a boy's name, but maybe consider a girl's way of spelling it. IMO it is adorable for a girl.

I don't like many boy names for girls though, so take that for what it's worth.

  • I love it.  I usually hate boy names on girls but for some reason I really like this one.  My husband is against it though.

    Yes

  • Love it!

And I honestly think Elliot is a little too feminine for a boy. JMO

  • I don't care for it - for a girl or a boy.  And I'm really not a fan of the Elle/Ella/Ellie trend.

Yeah, ditto. Elle is gorgeous and a GIRLS name, while Elliott is masculine and a BOYS name.

  • I like it though nobody else on this board seems too. :) It's on our list too, she would be named after her great grandfather.
  • LOVE! Would have named DD this but my DH wouldn't let me...

  • Elliot is seriously my favorite name. If DD had been a boy, she would have been Elliot. We only plan on having two children, so if the next were a girl- I would seriously consider naming her Elliot. I think it can be adorable for little girls and I secretly like boy's name for girls. However, despite my love for the name, I don't think I would actually use it for a girl because I know that having a "boy's name" would end up being a major PITA for my child.

  • My son's name is Eliot, so obviously I love it.  I am not a fan of it as a girls name through.  There are tons of girls names that are classic, not terribly overused, and cute.  Boys, not so lucky.
  • We are considering Elliot too for a dd... I have a friend whose dd is Eleanor Grace, goes by Ellie Grace.  We DON'T want her to go by the nn Ellie because our last name is super common, and Ellie is so popular.  However, I love the name - it is on our short list - see my post above.

  • I don't like it - I understand the appeal, but please understand...it's my number 2 boys name, and having someone suddenly say - hey, I'm turning this name girl, truly sucks. You may some day have a boy, and you'll see what I mean. It's hard to find a name for a boy that hasn't been snapped up by trendy namers.
