Question about traveling in cabs and car seats

Ok so this may sound like a silly question but I live in NYC, use cabs a significant number of times per week, and couldn't help but wonder. If I wear the baby (when old enough of course) and I wanted to get a cab one day when I'm already out, what do you do about the car seat situation? Is that a no-no to take a cab?? Should I always plan to have a car seat when traveling in a cab? Please let me know if you've been in this situation or have any suggestions. Please don't flame me for even asking, I was just wondering.

Re: Question about traveling in cabs and car seats

  •  I imagine that cabs won't allow babies unless they're in a seat!  Isn't it illegal?!

  • I've seen (random) people do it, without the car seat so I didn't really know what the consensus is on that. I guess realistically speaking, I'll probably be lugging around the car seat/ travel system with me everywhere just out of general paranoia for baby's safety.

    I just found this:

? What are the rules regarding child safety seats and seatbelts in taxicabs?

Driversof yellow medallion taxicabs and for-hire vehicles and theirpassengers, are exempt from laws regarding car seats and seatbelts. Keep in mind, the TLC encourages everyone in the vehicle to buckletheir seatbelts while riding in a cab.  There are no Taxi and LimousineCommission rules regarding this, as it is a State exemption. Passengerswith children are encouraged to bring their own car seats, which thedrivers must allow passengers to install.
*NOTE - Children under the age of seven are permitted to sit on an adult's lap.

Thank you!! This was so much help!!

  • I'd definitely take a carseat, even though that would be really inconvenient. FYI, you can wear a newborn, just make sure you're doing it safely.
