How much do Lactation Consultants charge?

I'm considering making an appointment with a lactation consultant.  I've looked at a few websites for consultants in my area and rather then quoting a price, they "remind" you that formula feeding can cost $1400 - $2700/year!  I can only imagine how much a consultation will cost!  Did your insurance cover any of the visit?

  • Mine was 150 and she came to the house. Spent about an hour. It was kind of pricey but worth the peace of mind. Also I can always email or call her later and she won't charge me.

  • $125 for an hour and a half consult, with free follow up phone calls. been super helpful so far...
  • Mine was $100 but she gave us tons of free stuff and 3-4 follow up visits for free.  Totally worth it.
  • Mine was $200 for 2 hours. I've also seen A doc of breastfeeding medicine. She was $300 for an hour and a half and has been EXTREMELY helpful and hasn't charged for ant followup emails, calls and brief visits.
  • you could always contact your local la leche league leader first... its free to talk to them on the phone and I've had them solve several problems for me over the phone... if they can't help you then call a LC

  • I had an appt. with one and I think it was $75 for an hour, and my insurance picked it up.  After that, I discovered the hospital where I delivered my children has a daily BF support group.  It's run by the LC's, and I was able to get help there ..... for free!  They also have a support line you can call to speak w/a LC if you have questions.  They were great at the group - every person was able to chat individually w/the LC, get help w/specific issues, etc.

  • I paid $225, which I thought was too much - it was an hour visit and I wasn't having any issues just wanted to make sure I was doing everything right when I got home from the hospital.

  • free through my hospital. You call make an appt (and see 1 of 3 ladies - whoever is working that day). I do have to go to the hospital but she was very helpful. I had lots of problems and saw her 4 or 5 times - including pumping in front of her to see what size of flanges i needed for my pump. I can go as many times as i need to. And they write up a report and send it to the peds office.

Then once a wk they have a BF support group with one of the LC. I can do weekly weight check, and a weighed feeding. and the LC can answer quick questions. (Like how much should baby eat for X wieght, how often, how much should he/she gain/wk, i have a lump/clogged duct what do i do...)

And my insurance would have covered 1 LC visit.
