My little Elph just bit the dust (right before Halloween! Arrgh...) I have wanted to get a better camera for a long time now, so this is my chance. I want a DSLR - willing to spend a decent amount but nothing crazy. Something fairly user friendly for a newbie who is used to point and click but is willing to learn more/put in more of an effort. Any recommendations??

I have recommended this before, but you need to check out the Sony Nex. I was in the same boat as you...always used point and shoots, but wanted the quality of dslr. I didn't really want to drag around a huge camera though. The Sony Nex is new and really *hot right now (I did my research)...it is basically a dslr in a point and shoot's body. It is targeted for people like you and I, but a lot of pro photographers are using it too because the picture quality is amazing and it is much more portable.
Some girls here recommended this forum to me, and it really helped me a lot:

You can see a lot of examples of the pics it takes and get lots of questions answered.
Also, this camera is so FUN to use and has some awesome features. I love mine and am so glad I bought it!
ETA: The menu system also has little tips and hints that help novice's like me know what to do...lol. All the settings can be confusing and the little on-screen guide really helps. The menu system is great for beginners. A lot of experienced users complained about it originally, but Sony just released a new firmware update that took care of most of the professional's "issues".
