Anyone have a shy/dependant LO?

My DS is very friendly with people...he likes to giggle, smile, and wave at them...but he does like to stay close to his momma...We went to a play group this morning, and I could not help but notice that ALL the other kids would go into the middle of the play circle and go off and play with toys on their own, but DS was happy to just stand next to me and play with my hair and giggle...

He is not clingy and seems fine when any family/friend plays with him  and holds him, but he seems to like to stay close to me rather than 'explore' and do his own thing when we are in a group setting...not complaining, I just want to be sure he is well adjusted! Could it just be his personality or a stage??

  • Yes, E needs me there all the time.  It takes her a while to warm up to different places.  She's just shy.  And she won't smile and wave at strangers, she frowns at them.  I think its her personality because she has been this way since day one.

  • Was this his first time at the playgroup?  It could take a few weeks for him to warm up and feel comfortable with everyone.

This exactly.  Jonah will cling to me for a while in a new place and then in a few minutes he's running off and I can't keep up!

  • DD doesn't necessarily need to be by me, but she will go off and play by herself rather than trying to play with other kids or be near them. She does act shy for a little while at first when we are out or around people, even sometimes people she sees regularly like my mom. She is just very content to play by herself in general, her cousins always steal her toys and she will just go off and find something new to play with. I think its just her personality, she is a lot more vocal and outgoing at home but has always been very laid back when we go places..she likes to trick people into think she is a little angel : )

  • DD is always a watcher and clinger in a new situation.  Or even the first few moments of a familiar situation, like a class we take each week.  She's in daycare and I know she's totally independent and fun and playing with the kids there when I'm not around, I can watch her on the webcam and see she is doing great.  She just prefers to take time to acclimate.  And, I like to think that she thinks I'm soooooo cool that she'd rather hang around mama than the other kids.
  • It always takes DS 5-10 minutes to warm up when we are in a group situation and he has been going to the same play group since he was 3 months old.  He is an intense observer at first.  He never cries or gets upset, he just has to figure it all out.  He has always been this way and I believe it is his personality.  He rarely smiles at strangers either.
  • DD is VERY shy when she first wakes up or when we first get somewhere where there is a group of people. It takes her a good half hour to warm up to people.
