some of the registrys have essentials lists...the one at BRU is a good place to start, but don't go overboard! Baby needs love, sleep, food and diapers (cloth or disp.) everything else is just there to be a comfort or to make things easier, more fun, or CUTE!
My OB gives out a little magazine put out by Babies R US that has a good list of stuff. I'm sure they have it online somewhere. It was actually pretty useful because it showed you the different ways you can go with things you need. Like all your options of cribs, or types of pumps, or what different blankets can be used for.
Yeah, BRU will give you a good place to start. They have them at all the stores and online. I found it after I did my registry, but I had most of the items listed already on mine.
Re: Is there a list of baby essentials?
I got this site off the multiples boards... much of it is specific for twins, but still gives you a good idea:

this is going to be my motto!!!
