Stupid Question of the day

We need to get some diapers before the kiddo gets here. We got some size ones at the shower - but I think they are going to be too big. What size should be get and what count? Thanks for letting me ask stupid questions. Just don't want to get something we don't need or too much of it.

Re: Stupid Question of the day

  • K was 6lbs,4oz and needed preemie sized dipers at first.  I think we went through 4 packages og the pampers swaddlers preemies.  The hospital will send you home with some diapers too.

BTW, totally not a stupid question, we had to make a Target run on our way home from the hospital because we needed to buy diapers, the CDs I had at home didn't fit her until she was 5 weeks old.

  • I'm not a mommy, but I've heard that newborns go through an average of 10 diapers per day, so that's 70 minimum for one week.  I don't know what count the packages come in, but I would get enough for the first week in both newborn and size 1 since you won't know your baby's weight until s/he's born.

Have you had your shower yet?  A lot of people get diapers as gifts so you might not even have to worry about buying the first few packages yourself.

ETA:  I obviously missed the fact that you got your diapers at your shower.  :)

  • M was a big boy. I went through only 1 box of the newborn diapers and then moved onto the Size 1.
  • You guys rock - - thanks for always having the answers. Now just to figure out what kind - - anyone use the natural or green ones they sell?
  • I used the huggies naturals or whatever they are called and they were fine as diapers but I don't think they are much better as far as the green factor. We have some 7th generation now and DH likes them, I haven't used them.
  • SO not a dumb question.  I've been wondering the same thing.

We didn't get a single pack of diapers at the shower this weekend.

I didn't get any diapers at our shower either and we didn't tell anyone that we would be CDing.

We use 7th generation, and love them, you should be fine w/ 1 pack of the newborns to get you started. Just remember that not all stores carry them, so make sure you always have enough to get you through the night.

  • Just thought I'd add my experience.  DS was a 9 pound 1 ounce boy and I was convinced that newborn diapers wouldn't fit him because the cut off is 10 pounds.  Boy were we wrong!  We used newborn diapers in the hospital and a friend gave us two packages of them which we went through.  (The 36 count-ish size.)  I believe we bought either one or two newborn packs after that.  He was in newborn size diapers for the first 3 weeks of his life in part because even though he was 8 pounds at his smallest weight after birth, he's slim like his daddy.  So I'd make sure I had at least one package of 36 or two before little one was born just to be safe.  On average we went through 10 diapers a day but we had one day where DS's diaper was changed about every 45 min.  Fortunately that only lasted most of one day.

If you really want to be safe, don't open the package and keep your receipt.  Most stores will take back diapers with receipt for either credit (Target) or exchange for a different size (BRU).  I wish I had bought more to start with but thanks to a generous friend it wasn't a big deal.  Otherwise we would have had Grandma stop by Target on her way home from the hospital.  Hope that helps!
