WWYD - Job related

This morning I got an email about a position within my company that I am really interested in. I had to tell my boss about it since the recruiter would be reaching out to her for backing. When I told my manager about it she asked if I thought this was a good time to be interviewing given that I was pregnant and why would they hire me if I would be out on maternity leave. My manager has a kid and usually really good about work/life balance - - so I was a little floored by her comment. I know that they can't discriminate against me interviewing - - but I still want the opportunity to interview. Do you think I should still try and interview for this position? I did let the recruiter know about the baby and leave - - but also added that I would be willing to return early from maternity leave if needed. Thoughts? I'm also worried what this could do to my chances of returning to my current job once maternity leave is over. I think I just shot myself in the foot. :(

  • You might not be able to return to your current job?  Is that allowed?

Honestly, I would apply for it. It lets the recruiter know that you are interested.  You might be surprised to get the job even with the leave.  If you don't get it, and someone else does and they are not good at it, the recruiter may remember you and you will maybe still get the job.

  • I don't see any harm in interviewing.  That seems absurd to me that they wouldn't let you come back to your current job after maternity leave if you don't get the position. I also think that giving up some of your maternity leave shows your dedication and flexibility.  Good luck!

  • I guess I worry that since they know I am looking that my job will be eliminated once I am out on leave. I am speaking to the recruiter tomorrow and the interview will be set up for next week. All I can do is interview and see what happens. Thanks for the support. :)
  • I think you did the right thing - interviewing can't hurt.  And I also think your boss's comment was a little forward...  And just for that (and because I like you, lol) I hope you get it and DON"T have to come back from mat leave early.  Good luck, girly!

  • If FMLA applies to your company, your job has to be there for you when you come back. Go for it and GL! I agree that offering to return early shows your dedication.
