blood draw for lead test...

has anyone's lo had this?  we have to have dd's blood drawn tomorrow and i'm just wondering what i can expect.  i'm making dh come along b/c i don't think i can do it alone :(

Re: blood draw for lead test...

  • I'm not sure if this is the same but when DD had blood drawn for iron levels, the nurse pricked her heel and collected the blood in drops. DD never flinched.

  • no, it's not the same.  this is an actual draw like how you or i would have it done-in the arm...i wish it was just a heel prick!
  • DD had to get blood drawn at her 1 year appt. it was not fun. DH held her down, and i had to help too. the hardest part was holding her down. the actual draw wasn't awful, DD just didn't want to sit still.

  • We have to get this done because my husband loads ammo and shoots targets.  The pedi told us that we have to go to an outside lab so I'm guessing it's more than a heel prick.
  • We did it when she was about 14 or 15 months old. We waited a little bit to do it. I was scared of what was going to happen to. It is easier with two people but can be done with one. The nurses are so skilled that they know exactly what to say and do. I held her on my lap and had one arm across her chest to hold her while the nurse held one arm. She mostly didn't like having her arm pinned down. And honestly it was like a shot. She was upset about, cried, and then was happy as soon as we were out of the doctor's office. It went so much better than I thought. You'll be okay.
  • MY DD had blood drawn yesterday for lead and anemia... They tried to get a vein but said she was to small so they took it from her finger...I was soooo nervous but she did great didnt vry or even flinch..it took longer using her finger so by the end she got a bit figety but seriously she was fine
  • I declined this. She was getting 4 shots the same day and I told them not to do it.
  • heel prick is much much worse than just a regular blood draw, i do it alllll the time. Heel prick takes forever!

My son had his done at his 12 month appt...sat on my lap and just looked at the lab tech doing it, never flinched/cried anything! He did awesome. It's seriously over in like, 45 seconds start to finish.

she had her shots last week and i told them that there was no way i was getting the blood draw that same day.  we're going tomorrow b/c i actually have my GD test at the same time.  i was so irritated b/c the cutoff for when your house was built is 1967 and our's was built in 1966...ugh!

  • Oh and I brought her lovey bear just bc i know she uses that for comfort
  • We've had to do it twice now, and I won't lie - it sucked. The second time they never could find her vein (which was the awful part), so they proceeded to stick her finger again afterward. Fun times.
  • yeah-i'm planning on bringing her baby and nuki....i just hope i don't cry.  i've never cried at shots but this+hormones may make me cry.  great......

UGH! How annoying! I had my GD test yesterday, btw. I found out that I've gained 19 pounds in 2 months. ACK!

Yea, I just told them no way. She didn't even ask us to come back...I live in a new apartment though so maybe that's why.

i'm sure that's why.  lucky.  well, at my last appt i gained 8lbs and we'll see how many i gained this month on mon:(  how depressing, right?  i doubt it has anything to do with the fact that i eat chicken wings 2x/week.  but with the weight that i lost from being so sick from my gallbladder at first, i've "technically" only gained 3lbs so far.  so that isn't so bad...i guess

  • It was no biggie for Grace. She didn't even cry.

  • It wasn't a huge deal for E.  She cried afterwards for maybe 30 seconds.  I made sure I went to a lab that did pediatrics though.  I have huge problems with getting my own blood drawn, I have the worst veins so maybe I had made it out to be much worse in my head.  E must have inherited DH's veins.

  • DS had his blood draw a week after his 12 month shots. It actually wasn?t as bad as I thought it would be. DH cam with me and they had him hold DS on his lap and basically bear hug him except for one arm. The needle was tiny? DS cried for a second when they put it in, then was mesmerized while they were actually drawing the blood, then cried for a second again when they took the needle out. I honestly think it was more traumatic for me!

  • It wasn't so bad for Monk. Getting an iv - that was horrible.
  • We had to have it done at 6 months and now again at 1 year. I went by myself to the 6 month and DS screamed bloody murder and cried big fat tears like we were killing him when they got the needle in. It was horrible. I am not going to the 1 year by myself, I'll take my mom or someone else for support. I almost started crying myself during it.

  • DS just had a blood draw for his allergy test.  I held him and he cried for about 15 seconds.  No big deal.
