So I bought a 3 day potty training eBook, . . I can honestly just summarize the method in a few sentences. . . and tell you what I modified. So #1 is pick 3 days to be AT HOME. We did venture out into the yard at the end of day 3, but I wouldn't have done that unless she was consistently going on the potty. Make sure you have no big tasks to do at home either. If you have any tasks to do, make sure the child "helps" you. At the beginning of day 1 "throw away" the diapers/pullups (I actually just hid them in a place she'd never find them). Buy about 20-30 pairs of underwear and tell them "we're out of diapers, you'll have to pick some underwear." Have them wear underwear and a shirt only. Make sure they know where their potty is and tell them "Let me know when you need to use the potty, o.k.?" Ask them that question a bazillion times a day. Don't say "do you have to go?" put the onus on them and say "Let me know when you have to go." Expect accidents. Stay right by your child all day (this was the annoying part since I have such an independent kid). The minute they start to have an accident (or any time they tell you they have to go), get them on the potty to finish. Praise them for finishing on the potty. Say, "next time let's get it all in the potty." Put on clean underwear, clean up the floor, move on with your day. Repeat, repeat, repeat. *** had no success in the potty on the first day, but at least she was running for the bathroom as she was having an accident instead of just standing there. No diapers for naptime or bedtime either. I put layers of waterproof bedwetting sheet in her bed so I didn't have to change the whole bed after she had an accident, just that layer. Before/after nap/bedtime is the only time you can suggest trying on the potty, but don't let them sit there forever. . . if they don't start going in a few seconds, then they don't have to go. Tell them "keep your bed dry. If you have to go potty, get out of bed and call to me and I'll help you." For poop, I had to read her a book for a minute so she could relax enough to go. Day 2 she had a couple of pee accidents and actually went poop in the potty. She also got up wet from nap, but she didn't actually sleep that day, just played in bed. Day 3 she had a poop accident and no pee accidents. She also stayed dry through naptime. I decided at the end of day 3 that she was going to wear a pullup for bedtime (so I really deviated from the method, here). She pees in those very first concious moments about half the time and the only way to catch that is going to be to wake her up earlier and I can't do that right now because of my schedule. I'm glad she went without for a couple of nights just to get her out of the habit of going in her pullup, but until she wakes up dry on consecutive nights, I'm not going to do nighttime. [adding: it's been about 4 weeks now and she's woken up dry for over 2 weeks and had zero accidents. . . I think I'll be taking her out of the nighttime pullup soon]. We have a sticker chart that I tried before and she didn't really care about it, but it got revamped with this effort. Every time she pees she gets a sticker. 10 stickers = a prize (I have a basket full of wrapped prizes on the counter in plain view). She also gets a prize for poop in the potty since she's having a little difficulty with that. [after a week we did stickers only for pee and she gets a prize for poop until we run out of them. . . I also decided that if she was accident free for a week she could see a movie--we saw the movie this week] On day 4 we finally ventured out of the house for yoga class. I put a disposible changing pad on the carseat just in case she had an accident in the car. We went potty before we left and then when we came home. She wanted to try when we were at yoga, but she didn't really have to go. |
