When to lower crib mattress?

DD is getting ready to start crawling here in a few weeks probably. Now that she's raising her head and chest up so far and playing with her mobile, I'm wondering when is the best time to lower the crib mattress. I have a bad back, so I would like to wait as long as possible, but I also want safety to be the top priority. When did you lower your LO's crib mattress and why?

Re: When to lower crib mattress?

  • We lowered it all the way when she started pulling up on things. We didn't bother with the intermediate heights...just went from highest to lowest setting.

  • we did it right after his 6 month well check...pedi recommended to do it as she said you never know when they are just going to start pulling themselves up:)    i think we did 2nd to lowest setting at that time and then when he did start to pull up/sit up (8mos) from his belly we went to the lowest.

Working nights in the ER, I can attest to this on behalf of multiple parents.

We never even had our cribs on the higher setting because I didn't want to mess with it. Both our cribs were installed day one on the lowest setting (DH and I are both tall and didn't mind)

  • BEFORE you think you need to. We lowered Vivian's to the lowest setting when she started rocking up on her knees.  Anderson went from his knees to pulling to standing in the course of a week, so we weren't going to take any chances.

  • We lowered it the minute she could sit up by herself.  We skipped the middle section.

  • When she was able to get herself to a seated position, we lowered it.  We lowered it again when she was standing.  We still have one more setting to go (this will be the lowest) and I need to go ahead and lower it.

FWIW: Our crib was *super* easy to lower (I am able to do it by myself).  It wasn't a big deal to lower to the intermediate settings.  Had it been more of a PITA, I'm sure we would have just gone straight to the lowest setting.
