Cloth Diapering

pocket vs AIO?

DH and I are looking into cloth diapers for once LO arrives. Which one do you prefer? I'm not too worried about day care b/c for at least the first year we are most likely having someone come to the house so I think she'll be fine with it. I just wasn't sure what the pros and cons for both are. If you get pocket, how many should you have on stock? TIA!

Re: pocket vs AIO?

  • Pockets

Pockets have adjustable absorbency; you can add as many inserts as you want. AIOs are convenient, but I hear they take forever to dry.

I would have a couple dozen diapers in stock to wash every other day.

  • agree completely with above, I have one AIO and it is a PITA to dry. I usually dry all the dips and then turn it inside out for the insert to dry. I would never invest in a AIO system... takes 2Xs the amount of time to dry!

  • Ditto DrLoretta.

I never find AIOs to be as absorbent as necessary.

  • Pockets, as you can add absorbancy. AIOs are nice but take forever to dry. I suggest Bumgenius 4.0s.

    This is good advice.

  • I like both and I think its good to have a variety. I have a lot of both.

I like my AIOs best for DH and when we have family watching her. They're also good for the diaper bag. A lot of my AIOs are BG AIOs which are stuffable and allow for you to add more absorbency should you need it. I have other AIOs that I really like too like Bottom Bumpers. AIOs tend to be more trim since they are often sized. Its also nice to be able to take them right out of the dryer/off the line and use as is.

AIO drawbacks are longer to dry, and its not as easy to add absorbency for some. Also, since most of them are sized it can be pricier since you have to buy new ones when LO outgrows them.

I love our pockets since they have the ultimate flexibility in absorbency. Most pockets are OS so they fit a variety of sizes. We use pockets for night time since I can add however much I need to it.

Pocket drawbacks are that you have to stuff them (not a big deal for a lot of people, myself included), OS diapers can be a bit bulky on small LOs. Depending on the diaper, they may not be as trim as an AIO - though that varies by type.

    Hope that helps!

  • For a while I liked AIO's better because you don't have to stuff and unstuff them, but my son has become a heavy wetter and doesn't last too long in an AIO anyone so I usually have to add another insert.  It kind of defeats the purpose of an AIO.... Another con to AIO's is they take forever to dry and if you do put them in the dryer it really shortens the life of them
