I am moving to Alabama for my husbands Army training in a couple weeks. Tell me something exciting about this place that I know nothing about. Right now about all I know is I am excited to be missing the Minnesota winters. Brr.
Alabama is SERIOUS about college football. And everywhere in Alabama is just a few hours away from the beach, the mountains, New Orleans, Nashville and Atlanta.
I'm a former MN girl and do NOT miss the winters at all! I've really come to love it here....it's a beautiful area of the country....lots of other fun cities really close by to visit too. Welcome!!
Welcome! Stick around this board is pretty awesome! Alabama, college football is awesome! The beaches are great, the southern food is amazing. If and when it snow the whole state shuts down...lol we don't know how to act.
Well you'll definitely be warm, comparatively speaking! If any flurries happen around here this winter, it'll be all over the news. (Forgive us, we're not sure why they make such a big deal about it either. We just hang out at home and it's usually melted by the afternoon. lol.)
If I do say so myself, southern food is the best, because it's comfort food at its finest
I'd say something a lot of people outside the state might not realize is that we're not as rural as we once were. In north AL, Huntsville is very suburban, and has all kinds of engineers and Ph.D's these days because of the companies that are now there. My DH's family is from Ohio and when he first came to Huntsville he kept saying how it was a lot like the area up by Cincinnati, which I imagine some of his family was surprised to hear. It has REALLY grown.
Birmingham has some of the best medical research going in the south and a huge hospital and medical school/university. (Also, it's nice that Birmingham is often a stop on big concert tours. The best venues are the Alabama Theatre and the Amphitheatre in Pelham.) And Mobile is a beautiful area , and despite worries about the oil, the beaches look great on AL's coast as well as the FL panhandle.
southern food, beaches, football, weather, mountains, not far from anything, football, fun stuff to do, football - did I say football already?!!?!? ha.

I actually went to a bowl game where your Gophers beat my beloved Crimson Tide. Not fun at all
Alabama and Florida's Gulf Coast are the best beaches anywhere!
