Adoption

YAY!!!

The information session went very well last night. I ended up very interested in a domestic heritage program where I can adopt a child waiting for a family, hopefully around 4 or 5 and pay no fees. When you adopt through this program, the state gives you a stiped to help raise your child until their 18 and also medicaid until their 18. So I wont even have to switch to a family insurance plan. This is a perfect option for me, especially since Im single. I was concerned how I would afford everything. Now I can be a parent and not have to stress about the financial part. I know they often have some emotional or development issues, but I have a lot of experience working with children with these issues! Im so excited! Im going to pay off some more things to be more stable and hopefully pull the plug in a year.

  • Glad you got some good info! Inquire also if they possibly get free tuition for any state school. Here in Texas, our boys are getting the monthly subsidy, Medicaid until 18 and they can attend any state school of their choice and the state will pay for it. :) All that was just a bonus!
  • That sounds awesome!

As someone who adopted an older child, I can assure you that it is the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life.  Seeing the changes in him and us every day makes all the challenges worth it.  But the transition is definitely difficult.  If you can, I highly recommend reading as much as you can on attachment and raising hurt/neglected children.  I don't know how I would have gotten through some of our more difficult periods (or will continue to), if I didn't know what kinds of behaviors to expect or have some techniques for dealing with them.

  • Wow the state tuition being free would be great! Im checking on that now. Luckily I have some experience with children that have gone through many of these things from working at state hospitals for children. I still want more assistance in this area though since I have never had a child in my home that had these problems.
