Bumpers??

My girls were preemies and are coming home under 5lbs. One is already home the other will be most likely this weekend.

Did you have bumpers on your cribs? Let me show you mine and tell me if I should take them off until the girls are bigger. We are really trying to start them in cribs from the beginning.

Re: Bumpers??

  • Bumpers scared me, so we use Breathable Bumpers.  The PBK bumpers that coordinated with the bedding were so cute, but I couldn't put them on.  I was too worried about suffocation.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I'm with pp's, I was too nervous about bumpers.  We still don't have any on our cribs, and so far we've never had a problem.  If and when they do start migrating towards the bars, I'll look into the breathable bumpers.

  • Bumpers scared me too - I would go with breathable ones - but you're probably ok without them until they start to move around in the cribs.
  • We registered for the breathable bumpers and got those. I'm more comfortable with those.

  • I did not have a bumper until they started moving around and then then I added a breathable one.
  • I have regular bumpers with our twins and had a regular bumper with DS1.  All of my boys like to sleep smashed right up against the bumper, I'm glad there's something soft to protect them from the bars.  It is a definite risk, you just have to decide for yourself if you want to take that risk.
  • We took them out.  We had one in the NICU for 4 weeks and we really listened to what the NICU nurses were telling us.  We just didn't want to risk having a SIDS death over a silly bumper.  When they got bigger, we used the breathable bumpers to keep their hands and feet inside the crib.  We use the 'pretty' bumpers we originally bought for the crib as bumpers around the radiator (and other hard objects) as they started to learn to roll and crawl.

  • We were told nothing in the crib except one baby and a tight fitting sheet. I don't remember when exactly, but I'm thinking they were like 6 months old before they started getting their arms & legs jammed between the rails and then I put the bumpers on. I figured they were moving around enough by then that they should be ok to move themselves away.

Really, at this point, they're not moving much so the bumpers are pointless. And quite honestly, it's a pain in the butt to try to change the bedding b/c it adds a lot of time and hassle to remove the bumper before changing the sheets. In those early days, sheet changes are a bit more frequent.

I would recommend waiting until you think they need it, and keeping it packed away until then.
