I had just about decided on the Colgate Classica I for our crib. It gets really good reviews. But then i started reading about possible links between chemicals in mattresses and autism????
I of course want what's safest, but i am also aware of some people being very quick to claim that organic is a must--for everything! We all slept on non organic crib mattresses and autism is more prevalent today then it was.
I don't argue that natural has its benefits. I guess I'm trying to gauge how valid of a concern it is. I'm curious who is/isn't using an organic mattress. And if you are, which one.
Thanks!
Re: Are you getting an organic mattress?
this. and i give a big ole' side eye to anything claiming to cause autism.
Umm from what I know, autism is due to genetic factors....
Anywho, I got a regular mattress but organic everything else. Her crib sets, mattress pad, covers, etc are all organic. I just felt that her immediate connection would be to the sheets etc and if not to the mattress cover.
Though there are many, many questionable links to autism, and it's doubtful that there's really ever going to be just *one* answer, I think the concerns related to the chemicals in mattresses (and other off-gassing chemicals in the nursery) are more linked to things like respiratory issues, allergies, neurological development, and overall health of a developing little body.
I fully intend to get an organic mattress- probably one of the Naturpedic ones and an organic cover. There are other places I'll cut cost corners, but as others have said, your baby just spends to much time on the mattress- why take a chance if your gut is steering you towards organic anyway.
