Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Suddenly Refusing Bottle

Around 6 months, DD suddenly started absolutely refusing to BF, at all. We thought it was a nursing strike, and stuck it out with a LC for quite awhile. DD never came back around. She would happily take a bottle, so we started bottle feeding and formula, which has gone very well, until about 2 days ago.

DD has been HYSTERICAL any time I try to give her a bottle--crying so hard that she's not making noise. I tried giving her formula via a sippy cup too, and she also wouldn't accept it. She will happily eat table foods all day long.

She broke a tooth about a week ago, and still has the runny nose/drool, so I'm not sure if there's another one coming and that's a factor,

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

  • My DD did this around 9 months too. It only last about a week at the most. So just keep offering and eventually she'll come around.

  • My son is 9 months too.  The last couple of week we were dealing with a nursing strike, now he is back on me like a leech.  I'd keep offering.   He will probably come around.  My guy also has a bit of a cold.

  • I think we have the same kid.  DS started refusing to BF at 7 months and we stuck it out until 8 months when I finally gave in and EPed.  He took the bottle fine, but then around 9 months absolutely refused to drink anything out of it.  This last for 2 weeks and in that time we got him to drink whatever he would out of the bottle or sippy (small frequent meals worked for us) and then added a lot of BM in baby cereal.  He sometimes would get 10oz of BM in cereal, but the pedi just wanted him to get some liquids in.

He did it again around 10.5 months and come to find out he was ready to move to the sippy.  He started refusing milk out of his sippy around his first birthday and some days would only drink 8oz.  Luckily that is acceptable once they are a year and eating well though.  He is just now getting back to drinking good from his sippy.
